Danger! Gamera Invades Ueno

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Kyodo: Alligator snapping turtle found laying eggs in Tokyo park
An alligator snapping turtle was found laying eggs Sunday beside a pond in Tokyo's Ueno Park, police officials said. The 50-centimeter-long rapacious turtle, a species native to North America, has been living in Shinobazunoike pond since apparently being abandoned by its owner, experts at Ueno Zoological Gardens said. The zoo experts said the turtle could have bitten people and caused serious injuries. The turtle was the model for the Gamera monster in a Japanese film series.

This was on the news last night, and she was one big sob, but if this is Mrs. Gamera, where is Mr.? I did a quick net look to see if they could develop eggs on their own and then have a mate fertilize after she lays them and appears not. They have to get knocked up. So Mr. has got to be around the pond somewhere!

I did note that they sometimes have an admirable condition called Paraphimosis, described as: "....Occasionally, the erect penis remains fully engorged and cannot be retracted. This condition is called paraphimosis...."

I guess there are a lot of benefits in being a turtle.

Well, gboothe, I hope this answers you question as to the turtle origin.

Gamera!
Gamera!
You're so groovy, Gamera!
You're so groovy, Gamera!
You are groovy, Gamera!
Sun, Moon, Mars Mercury
There's a big monster headed our way
Coming out of deep freeze
Whether we like it or not
Here it comes, flying down
Go! Go! Go!
Down it with jet flame
Groovy, groovy Gamera!
Groovy, groovy Gamera!
You are groovy, Gamera

Well maybe not.

Two point about the story. First of all, what kind of demented nutso would want to own a snapper? Second, generally snappers don't chase after people but will react wonderfully aggresively if say some Japanese school kids were to tease it, which of course never happens.;)

Seems to me I remember them being available in stores way back when. Could have even been a part of the Gamera craze! They've done sillier stuff!

It's easy to tell the kids who don't tease them. They have both hands and all their fingers!

Dimmer, did you ever go hand fishing for snappers? That'll keep your interest up!

I saw an alligator snapper on a golf course and of course, a golf was teasing it with a iron. The thing snipped the club like it was made of balsa wood. Gotta be impressed with an animal that can do that.
