[floatr]Image[/floatr]MDN: Software logo designer claims plagiarism in Niigata tourist pamphlet
A logo designer for the Japanese word-processing software "Ichitaro" has sought a provisional injunction at the Tokyo District Court, demanding that a Niigata tourist association stop using an illustration she says resembles one of her works...Yoko Shindo, who is known as a top calligrapher, has been arguing that her work has been plagiarized. The illustration in question appears on pamphlets...that the Niigata prefectural tourist association is using...Shindo claims that the shape and brushstrokes of the character, and the use of colors -- red for the radical at the top, bluish purple for the bottom left part, and green and red for the bottom right part -- bears an extreme resemblance to a work she produced in 2002....The advertising agency reportedly responded, "The designer who produced it said it just happened to match, and there has been no copyright violation"...more...

Marxy over at Neomarxisme maintains that the earlier reaction to Wada's plagiarism "knock(s) out the final leg on the myth that 'there is no sin in Japan against copying other artists' works.'" and attributes the increase in accusations to the availability of better information on the net. This thread covers some recent examples of anime and manga plagiarism

Actually, plagiarism and originality are relatively modern concepts, particularly in Asian art. For hundreds of years, artists were judged on their ability to accurately copy famous artworks and styles of older artists.

Just to give one relevant example, even today, calligraphers all study the same examples of kanji dating back more than a thousand years, and are judged by their ability to accurately copy the characters.

I think this particular plagiarism accusation is ridiculous.

A large part of the film Chihwaseon, about Korean painter Jang Seung-up, sets up evidence of his amazing skill by showing exactly that. He could accurately reproduce a Chinese master seemingly with only a cursory glance at the original.

Yeah, I was primarily thinking of Chinese ink painting when I referred to accurate copying, this is largely why "schools" of painting styles persisted for hundreds of years, you had to demonstrate your ability to paint according to the style of that school, and your masterwork would be a copy of a major work by the artist that established that style. But still, even in Europe, up through the Rennaisance era, artists were expected to faithfully copy previous works, and they were relatively anonymous compared to the school of painting or the studio. It was only with the Renaissance that artists became names in and of themselves, and originality became important.

Mainichi: Niigata tourist association withholds pamphlets, posters over plagiarism claims
A Niigata tourist association has decided to stop distributing pamphlets and displaying posters containing an illustration that graphic designer Yoko Shindo claims was plagiarized from her work. The tourist association maintains that the illustration was not plagiarized, but said it decided to withdraw the posters and stop distributing the pamphlets out of consideration for the influence they had on the prefecture's tourist image. Shindo...is reportedly now considering dropping the injunction request and filing a damages lawsuit.

Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

You were correct. Apparently you don't realize I have been a professional artist for over 30 years and have a degree in Art & Art History. So I have no reason to value your weakly-formed opinions, when they contradict what I learned in years of study with internationally renown artists and scholars.

Actually Chuck, we (well, most of the board from what I can tell) don't care.
