[floatr]Image[/floatr]Mainichi: Gum that makes body smell like rose targets men
Chewing gum may be a remedy for body odor, but the foods division of cosmetics giant Kanebo has gone a step further by creating gum that leaves people's bodies smelling like a rose. The company announced on July 10 that it would begin selling special chewing gum which causes a rose fragrance to be emitted from the body one to two hours after it is chewed. The gum, called "Otoko Kaoru" (male scent) Rose Menthol, contains the fragrant component geraniol, which is found in roses. According to Kanebo's food research laboratory, the component is emitted from sweat glands easily, in much the same way as garlic and alcohol. Maca, a plant that is rich in nutrition, was added, creating a mint-flavored, sugarless gum. The gum is aimed at men between their 20s and 50s who are worried about body odors and scents. Each packet, which costs 126 yen, contains nine pieces of gum. The product will be sold at station kiosks and convenience stores.

Reuters: Ageing Japanese men worry about body odour
Japanese men are worrying about more than mere sweat as summer temperatures rise: talk of body odour caused by ageing is adding to anxiety in a land that prizes being squeaky clean. Being Japan, it has also sparked a range of new products, from odour-eating suits to special chewing gum. "My wife tells me that I stink," said company manager Atsushi Asami, 47, interviewed on a typically hot and humid Tokyo street. "I am concerned about ageing odour and know there are anti-ageing odour products, but have not bought them myself." An on-line survey by CBIC Corp., a Tokyo-based company that sells deodorant products, found that 89 percent of 700 Japanese women in their 20s and 30s found men smelly in commuter trains...more...

Instead of chewing gum, they should try showering in the morning before they go to work (not just at night). Walking around all day without a shower after a full night's sleep is bound to make you smell gamey.

I tried the gum.
I still smell like arse.
I broke a mirror this morning, which means I should be getting 7 years of bad luck - but my lawyer says he can get me 5.

Couldn't they just, get stronger deodorant? Spending all that money on inventing a chewing gum that makes you smell nice seems a little silly when we already have the answer for the summer stinks and there's cancer to cure.

It can't be any worse than AOKI coming out with suits and even underwear made out of odor eating material.

Nothing more disturbing then to be wearing odor-eaters around one's croutch...

This whole kareishu thing is a bunch of bullshit. All they need to do is take a shower every morning, brush and floss their teeth, and buy some Speed Stick from Costco. The only reason Japanese guys stink when they get old is they totally give up on hygene.

You are an idiot.
So-called Kareisyu is outbreaked from internal organs. So even if stinky oyajis tear their skins off, they never can run away from Kareisyu.

So at exactly what point in their lives are Japanese men actually concerned with hygene?

Because they don't spend their younger years eating offal meats and gorging themselves on shit that should have been thrown out before it fermented.

:D

I never really notice the oyaji stench, aside from the random open mouth breather on a crowded train..

People in the US are rarely pressed up against each other in crowded trains; I'm sure we'd notice some stink if this were the case.

But Kamome brought up a good point; bathing once a day, at night, is bound to bring out an all day 'pungence'; Humans sweat a lot while sleeping! You can't cure crusted body odor by washing your face in the morning.

Why are Japanese men so against showering in the morning? Now I understand that if women did, it does take a long time to dry and style your hair, but most of the oyagis don't have enough hair to bother with anyway. Twice a day is the best, once before going to bed and then once before getting dressed in the morning. No fuss no muss.
