Kajima 'hid 500 mil. yen to use for kickbacks'

A Tokyo-based general contractor is alleged to have concealed about 500 million yen of income over a four-year period, using the money to pay kickbacks to ensure it won future contracts, sources said Tuesday.

Kajima Corp. is alleged by the Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau to have concealed the money over a four-year period through March 2005.

The sources said the hidden money was used for kickbacks to ensure the company continued to receive plant construction orders from a major pharmaceutical firm....more...

Major civil engineering firm raided on suspicion of tax dodging scam

Prosecutors and tax inspectors raided the headquarters of Mizutani Kensetsu, a major civil engineering company, in Kuwana, Mie Prefecture, and the home of a former chairman on Saturday for tax evasion.

The Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office and the Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau conducted the joint search on suspicion of violating the Corporate Tax Law. Prosecutors are expected to question the 61-year-old former chairman on suspicion of masterminding the tax evasion.

Other locations raided by prosecutors and taxation officials include a clothes manufacturer in Fukushima Prefecture, run by a younger brother of Fukushima Gov. Eisaku Sato....more...

Does this mean that the constuction industry/govt tenders etc are being cleaned up or do people think these stories are just token media pacifiers to keep people thinking that the government agencies are cleaning up their acts?
