

Asahi: Reader uproar over cat-killing confession
Award-winning author Masako Bando has triggered a furor by admitting in a newspaper column she killed newborn kittens. In the article, Bando, 48, who lives in Tahiti, French Polynesia, said she disposes of newborn kittens as a way to stem the growing number of stray cats that live on the island. She said her deed is the same as having cats sterilized. As of noon Thursday, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun, which published the piece as part of its "Promenade" column in its Aug. 18 evening edition, said it had received 508 e-mail messages and 88 phone calls, mostly criticizing Bando.
