But if I were to have to guess I would say it wasn't the Fusion that is next door to the Hisio Restaurant, behind Ibis, since they closed their tank (used to have a couple Aussie mermaids). Ben Johnson used to manage it before he left for NZ (should be back by now). They may or may not have re-opened the tank, but the entrance fee would still remain!

I surprised nobody has mentioned that the actual quality of the photographic work in PINK BOX is good and Jaon Sinclair seems to have a better "rapport" with the girls she's photographing than most. I was blown away. There were “train” clubs with all-you-can-grope commuting women. And fake hospitals, where the customer can lie in bed and get “treated” by a pantiless nurse. There were “Sexual Harassment” offices where men can tear the pantyhose off their “secretaries”.
I returned to California and started a respectable career as a corporate lawyer, but I never forgot about those clubs....

Sorry, I aint one of those homestay students who gush about what 'an honor it is to live in Japan'. Meaning - I'm not naive enough to think this gaijin was allowed to exploit the Yakuza's world for her own financial purposes. That's bullshit.

What was the price they extracted? This Sinclair woman probably had to perform at these same sex clubs they photographed for 'art'. And I betcha she just loved every minute of it. This interest is just a cover for her own fantasies about women. She should admit it.

I think she tells a plausible story. Also, her timing was probably good too. As she points out, a lot of clubs have their own websites now featuring pictures of the girls and the interior so these kinds of images are not unique these days. Clubs generally don't want you taking photographs to protect their customers' privacy and that of the staff. However, while a lot of the girls might not care to show their faces, there are enough who don't give a damn. If she did know the publishers of "Tokyo Soapland" and have a regular column then that would have easily given her sufficient credibility and access.

But don't let me get in the way of your fantasy.

Given she lives in San Francisco, if the need she needed to fufill as was as you described, she wouldn't need to go to Japan....she probably could just go a couple of blocks or miles to any number of local happening club type places....of course, given than most of these J clubs seem to designed for wants and desires of men, I question how her "lesbo" fantasies might be fufilled in J clubs.

Obviously the fact that she could basically spend a year in Japan shooting, means she either:

(a) was independently wealthy and could just pay-off anyone she needed to help her get the shots.

(b) she was working actively in the pink industry, probably as a kabakura hostess or similar, and most likely dating one of the midlevel yaks. many gaijin women businesses in japan get their starts this way.

In either case - what did she 'expose' - there's absolutely nothing new and interesting about this. Better she would have been on key and reporting about the real human trafficking around the times of the height of Hindonecho and Kawaguchi just prior to the Japanese lobbying for UN security seats.

I'm surprised Joan Sinclair has come in for a little bit of stick in this thread (perhaps I could have used a better phrase, but, too late now!).
She's done all lovers of the Japanese flesh trade a big favor. Contrary to Dr. P's claims, I think what she's done may have been a first. I, for one, find what she's done both new and interesting, and I've been writing on this stuff for almost a decade. It's pretty hard to get in well with one establishment, but to have become accepted so widely and by so many places is a fantastic achievement. Good on her and who cares how she did it.
I've ordered my copy of "Pink Box" and can't wait for it.
I don't know her and hadn't heard of her until this thread, but I'm deeply grateful. Will put up a review of the book first chance I get.
