Excuse me for getting off the original topic but ...

I met a man working for Futitsu and he said that the company was literally killing people. Apparently there ambulances coming to the company nearly every day from people dropping over at their desks. He also said a guy in his 30s or 40s dropped over dead at the train station on the way home from work. Karoshi is something that really happens there.
Spending 14 to 16 hours (or so he said) a day in the office was very normal.
This man is trilingual and I just thought that he should get out of there right away. At least get into a foreign company if he wants to do the same kind of work.

Your exact quote, and the lead-in to your comment, was "I wonder if Bush is on the other side of the boot."

Snarky asides like that are both unnecessary and provocative. Mind you, I could at least fathom the rationale for quips about Bush in a thread on political or military affairs, but not here.

And as for being rude...you insulted the President of the US, the leader of my country. Whether you choose to do so is your decision, but don't feign surprise when people call you on it. To you, "it's just a joke" but to people like me, in the non-political context here, it's a slap in the face pure and simple, regardless of political leanings.

The North Korean government is accusing Japan of being a boot-licking country. Now, whose boot do you think that might be?

Pretending to not understand something, pretending to get really upset, and using abusive language seem more like the hallmarks of a troll.

I am not criticizing Bush. The picture and my comment would seem to be making fun of what the North Koreans said.

Either you are too thick to get that or you are a troll yourself.

I wasn't making fun of your beloved leader but any public figure can be made fun of, anyway. Even if I were making fun of him it would be so light as to not even warrant comment.

I have to come to the conclusion that you are either very dim or a troll yourself.

Since you've been cordial elsewhere, perhaps I should be as well.

To clear something up: Bush is not my "beloved" leader - I'd give my eyeteeth for an American Blair or even Howard - but he is my President. Other world leaders have variously labeled him Satan, an embodiment of hegemony and hypocrisy, a killer and a madman, and a tool/puppet of Zionists/Israel and some of his own "countrymen" have deigned to depict him as Hitler, worse than Saddam, an engineer/architect of 9/11, a terrorist, or worse, so my defense of the man is, in light of this onslaught, becoming instinctive.

If you believe in Bush and think he's doing a great job (or even a good one) then of course there is no problem in your desire to defend him.

But defending him just because he's the US Prez is fucked. Questioning, criticizing, and speaking out against government wrongs are a fundamental part of any functioning democracy and are pretty much your DUTY as a citizen.

But really I was not making fun of Bush so much as joking about the picture of an attractive woman and the funny thing the North Koreans said. I understand where you are coming from. I was rude in what I posted earlier and I feel bad about that.

You shouldn't be apologizing. Socratesabroad overreacted.

Rather than apologize you should have fun and push a few more of his buttons. Anyone who overreacts like that deserves at least a bunch more buttons pressed.

You've been extraordinarily civil and I've realized that I pounced far too hastily. The long and short of it - I was wrong on two counts: first in my impressions of you, and second, in my heated response. I apologize for both.

I think Bush is an average President, but regardless of my opinion he is still the elected leader of my country* and my DUTY to that country is essentially the same as what I swore to when joining the service (and the several times thereafter that I re-joined):
I, ___________________________________, do solemly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic]

"Questioning, criticizing, and speaking out against government wrongs" are rights protected under the Constitution, but they are not the primary DUTY of an American citizen (should we also look to the oath of citizenship to find further evidence I'm right?).

*And yes, I do say 'my country' because that is that is my citizenship as evidenced by the passport I hold, something that has become painfully clear here in China and elsewhere in Asia.

I'm a vet too, so I gotta go with Soc on this point. You don't have to like a boss to loyally refrain from comment and work for the country and ideals he represents.
