That's simply harrassment of the foreigner, the J-spouse, and their families. How do they presume to ask for detailed information about relatives who have no substantial connection to the foreigner's stay in Japan? I hope more reasonable lawmakers are challenging this.

Between these new immigration procedures and the new education policy about instilling patriotism in elementary students, things aren't looking very good.

Fun Fun... It looks like ill be going through this ordeal soon. Dont be mistaken that this is only J. Immigration though. We had to go though a similar process in Australia for our spouse visa. At least I dont have to get a chest X-ray for this one.

Still, looks like a pain in the buttocks.

Immigration.. making criminals outta honest people.. gotta love it.

I passed this along to the wife, and she's saying that this looks like absolutely nothing new (as of about 3 years ago). She even had to draw a map from our place to the nearest train station on the form (no longer required).

She did say that apparently they're being 'nicer' now by putting the forms online, unlike then, where ya had to fill all that shit out on the spot when at the office applying for the marriage certificate.

The form also used to ask "Do your families know about the marriage? Who knows/doesn't? Are they for/against it?"

As one who was married in Japan and received such a visa there, and then had to go through the whole green card thing in the usa several years later, nothing in that process would bother me one bit. There are things worth keeping private, of course, but none of those rise to that level for me.

Now, if one were to answer that their parents are against the marriage and then the application was denied, then that'd be a problem. Otherwise it's just information gathering.

The only thing that bothered me about giving them a lot of personal information is the tendency for the said information to find its way into the hands of information brokers.

The immigration guy's responses sounded pretty reasonable to me. And it turns out the applicants aren't even required to answer the questions! It also doesn't apply to those already living in Japan. If you are denied, you can appeal anyway. So once again it appears to be a case of much ado about nothing from Debito.

have been married in Japan for some time but wish to switch their visas to a status involving marriage

I'm not sure why he is raving about this being new - like etto_neh said - 3 years ago when I changed to a spouse visa we were asked to provide a lot more details as well as a map and confirmation that our families knew and accepted our marriage.

Also to be fair - other countries are a lot stricter about this and more invasive than Japan.

Really the biggest complaint I have about Immigration is how lousy they are at disseminating information - both to appiclants and amongst themselves. It's almost a given that you can ask 2 people the same question and get a completely different answer within the same office.
