Leader Of Australian Biker Gang Stuck In Japan

Postby Mulboyne » Thu Mar 22, 2007 2:41 am

[floatl]Image[/floatl]News.com: Aussie bikie leader left high and dry in Japan
THE leader of an Australian bikie gang has been stranded in Japan and may never get to return to his home in Sydney. Rebels national president Alex Vella recently flew to Japan with his middleweight boxer son Adam Vella, who lost a Saturday bout against Japan's Koji Sato in Tokyo. The NSW Police Force is currently preparing a case for the immigration department to refuse the multi-millionaire a new visa to return to Australia...The 54-year-old citizen of Malta has lived in Australia as a resident for about the past 40 years...He was left stranded because his resident return visa expired in January, forcing him to apply for a new one in Japan...The police will argue that along with Mr Vella having a previous drug conviction, his position of authority within the motorcycle gang means he does not pass the immigration test of good character...more...

Here's an article about Vella by Ben Hills - author of the controversial book on Princess Masako.

My interest in this story waned when I read that the "bikie" was a Maltese citizen. Then it was revived again when I read his son, an ozzie citizen, got his ass kicked by a Japanese boxer.

More than likely the Aussie boxer lost a decsion to the "hometown hero". As in K-1 and other MMA, foreign competitors do not win in Japan unless they win by knock-out. A win on points will be ignored and the fight awarded to the local boy.

Japanese immigration authorities may be wondering why the Australian authorities didn't tip them off about Mr Vella - especially with his drug conviction. Or perhaps they did.

He's already left for Malta.

News.com: Family fears for bikie leader stuck in visa row
THE family of Rebels bikie gang leader Alex Vella are worried and angry after being told there is little prospect of him being allowed back into Australia, an associate says. The Rebels' national president has flown from Japan to his homeland, Malta, as he awaits a decision on whether he will be granted a new visa allowing him to re-enter Australia, after his resident return visa expired in January. He recently flew to Japan with his middleweight boxer son Adam Vella, who lost a bout on Saturday night against Japan's Koji Sato in Tokyo. Adam's trainer, Tommy Mercuri, said the Vella family, all of whom are Australians, only discovered there was a problem after they arrived in Japan, and were not optimistic he would be granted a new visa.

"They're very very concerned because, as the solicitors are telling them, ... it's not looking too good," Mr Mercuri said. "They're very, very upset – very upset and angry. He's been here for 40 years, and it's just not right what they've done to him." Mr Mercuri alleged Mr Vella had been misled by officials at Sydney Airport when they told him he would not need a visa.

. . . Mr Mercuri alleged Mr Vella had been misled by officials at Sydney Airport when they told him he would not need a visa . . .

He didn't need a visa . . . for Japan.

As for Oz, even if he asked about that, they probably figured he didn't need a visa for the Land of Oz either . . . because, in their view, he wouldn't be coming back.

Still, I would've thought that there's worse places to be banished to than Malta.

Just ask U.S. army deserter Charles.

And former world chess champion Bobby Fischer - exiled in Iceland

Yeah but I wonder just how happy Malta is to have one of it's own angry bikers back.

Good move by by the Aussies to get rid of an undesirable.
Didn't the biker have to fill in the back back of the immigration card where it says have you ever been convicted of a crime and how much money are you carrying?

The Ben Hills article mentions that Vella is "functionally illiterate" which may have played a role. I think he scarpered out of Japan before someone got around to detaining him for making a false statement. His lawyers don't appear to have been to proactive given that they must have known about this trip for some time.
