Asahi: Police, MSDF to jointly investigate possible data leak
Kanagawa prefectural police decided Wednesday to start a joint investigation with the Maritime Self-Defense Force over a possible leak of classified information, including data on the state-of-the-art Aegis air defense system...The investigation is targeting an MSDF officer who took home the defense information without authorization, and who is married to a Chinese woman arrested in January on suspicion of violating the immigration law...When investigators searched the officer's home in connection with his wife's case, they found a hard disk containing classified information about a destroyer equipped with the Aegis system, and other materials... The officer told police he obtained the information through a colleague. But the ranks and duties of the officer and his colleague would not allow them security clearance to gain access to such high-level classified information...more...

Well, I suppose we can work her in under the YBF guidelines.

But, I don't see the evidence of the spy thing. If he had any sort of clearance or access, they would have had to know much more info on the wife to include knowing she was in a visa mess. The husband could of course, procure classified info from mates, but it doesn't much look that way, given the downplay on what he had. Unless, they aren't reporting something, it looks like they just want to make her into another Sorge for the media. Then again, it could be a pilot for a new JSDF CM without the dancing!

Yomiuri: Porn swap tied to Aegis info leak
Top-secret data on Aegis destroyers obtained by a Maritime Self-Defense Force petty officer 2nd class were found to have been obtained after he copied obscene images to his hard disk from a colleague's computer, without knowing the information contained the secret data, police sources said Wednesday. The Kanagawa prefectural police also found the secret information was leaked to another petty officer, meaning the case now involves three petty officers, including the 33-year-old 2nd class petty officer, who is a crew member of the destroyer Shirane of Escort Flotilla 1. Hard disks and computers of each officer were found to have contained obscene images along with the secret information, the police said. The police believe that repetitive exchanges of such images triggered the spread of the secret information...The computers of the other two petty officers were found to have contained a large collection of obscene images...more...

It is except his FG wife is probably going to Kosuge to prepare for her one way trip home.

That's true. Is Kosuge an immigration detention center or something?

Surely they need some kinda evidence, perhaps too strong a word, some kinda hint, that he passed the information on, or his wife did.

My overall reading of the situation is this...

He did one of his JWomen co-workers at the hanami party, she got in a dizzy rage and leaked the info about the Chinese wife. The J lady revenge at its best.

Spy????

I'm curious about the wife's immigration violation. Perhaps she hasn't been granted a spouse visa yet but was working. Or perhaps she made some false declarations on her application.

Guardian: Police Raid Japanese Naval Academy
Japan's state and navy police raided a Japanese naval academy Saturday over an alleged leak of sensitive warship technology data shared between Japan and the United States, officials said. The case involves U.S.-developed technology of high-tech Aegis radar on several advanced Japanese destroyers that is also used by U.S. warships carrying missile interceptors. It has alarmed officials as the allies accelerate their joint missile defense development amid North Korean missile and nuclear threat. Defense officials acknowledged the raid Saturday, but refused to provide details. "We cannot make a comment regarding investigation," said Navy spokesman Yutaka Fujisawa.

Investigators from Kanagawa state and Maritime Self-Defense Forces believe that computer disks containing the sensitive data were illegally copied and circulated among dozens of students and instructors at the First Service School in Etajima in western Japan, public broadcaster NHK reported Saturday. The case surfaced in March when police found one of the disks at the home of a Japanese naval officer in Kanagawa during a separate investigation of his Chinese wife over her immigration status. The 33-year petty officer second class was not authorized to possess the data. Police have been investigating how the disk ended up at his home and how its contents were circulated among naval students and other officers, Kyodo News agency said.

The raid over the alleged violation of the 1954 law concerning protection of secrets under bilateral security pact is reportedly the first at a Japanese naval academy. Defense Secretary Robert Gates expressed strong concern about the data leak during talks in Washington with Japanese Defense Minister Fumio Kyuma in late April. Japan began deploying its first advanced Patriot missile defense system in March, and also plans to introduce Standard Missile-3 interceptors on its destroyers over the next few years.
