http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapcf/05/14/japan.boy.arrest.ap/index.html
TOKYO, Japan (AP) -- A teenage boy holding a severed head appeared at a police station in northern Japan on Tuesday, saying he killed his mother, a news report said.

Kyodo News agency said police began an investigation after the 17-year-old boy turned up at a police station in Aizuwakamatsu city in Fukushima prefecture (state)

None of the local English news sites are running the story yet, and CNN only has four lines about it. Mainichi J-news (http://www.mainichi-msn.co.jp/today/news/20070515k0000e040012000c.html) doesn't say much more, but adds that police found a headless body at the house, have started questioning the boy, and have found that he and his younger brother were living alone, with the mother coming to visit periodically from elsewhere in the prefecture.

Yikes! Not another kid beheading someone. :(
It's a particularly vicious and brutal way to kill someone. What is wrong with these kids?
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

Asahi: Teen shows up at police station carrying mother's severed head
AIZU-WAKAMATSU, Fukushima Prefecture--A 17-year-old boy apparently decapitated his mother while she was sleeping and brought her severed head in a school bag to a police station Tuesday morning, police said. The headless body of his 47-year-old mother was found on a futon mattress in his apartment room. The teenager, a student at a prestigious senior high school, was arrested on suspicion of murder, they said. "I want terrorism and war to disappear from the world," police quoted the teenager as saying. "It didn't matter whom I chose to kill." According to Fukushima prefectural police and other sources, the student has a history of psychiatric care and has been frequently absent from school recently.

The boy reported to the Aizu-Wakamatsu police station around 7 a.m. alone. He told officers he killed his mother with a sharp instrument around 2 a.m. Tuesday when she was asleep, according to police. Police found a bloodstained knife in the room. The boy's younger brother, a second-year senior high school student who was in another room of the apartment, did not realize his mother was being killed, police said.

The two brothers lived by themselves in the apartment located in a quiet residential district about 2 kilometers from busy JR Aizu-Wakamatsu Station. The parents were living in the town of Kaneyama, about 60 km from Aizu-Wakamatsu. The brothers lived in the apartment so that they could attend classes at public high schools in the city. Neighbors said the mother visited the boys' apartment on weekends. She was a child-care worker at a public nursery school operated by Kaneyama town, and there were no signs of trouble among the family members, sources said. The mother is believed to have worked until around 6 p.m. on Monday and then headed for her sons' apartment.

The senior high school the boy was attending is one of the most prominent in the prefecture. More than 60 percent of the graduating students moved on to four-year colleges and universities in fiscal 2005. After being informed of the incident, the school suspended classes and instructed students to return home. Some of the students were seriously disturbed by the crime, news of which spread quickly via their cellphones. The prefectural government will dispatch psychotherapists to the senior high school to help students, parents and guardians stay calm, officials said.

Although it is not clear what triggered the attack, psychiatrist Rika Kayama, a professor and expert on psychopathology at Tezukayamagakuin University, said the boy might have routinely felt a strong sense of conflict and hatred toward his mother. "If my assumption is correct, he might have developed a strong hatred against his mother and felt that he would be in trouble if she were to come back to life," Kayama said. "There is another possibility that he feared, as a fact or delusion, that his mother would either attack or do harm to him." Kenji Kiyonaga, a professor of criminology at Japan Women's University, warned that it is becoming increasingly easier for children and young adults to commit murder because they have been brought up in an environment in which they feel they can acquire and do anything they want.

"The characteristic aspect in criminal cases involving juveniles nowadays is that although the parties are aware of (what is right and wrong) as a moral code, they cannot control themselves," Kiyonaga said. The crime in Aizu-Wakamatsu came amid an increasing number of attacks committed by minors against their parents, some of them fatal. According to a National Police Agency survey, the number of murders and attempted murders committed by those 14 or older against their parents ranged from between three and nine from 1997 through 2004. The figure jumped to 17 in 2005. Official figures were not available for 2006, but the number is almost certain to exceed 10, sources said.

Teenage making headline by chopping off mum's head? Actually I think he wanted do scare the police, if not why bring the head?

Glad that the cinema's staffs stop me from seeing Hannibal Rising wth my son, otherwise, not only my photo (which is now up in the koban according to a FG witness), but my head might even end up in the koban one day. Lesson learnt.

IHT: Japan teen watched rap music DVD at Internet cafe with mom's head in bag
A teenage boy suspected of beheading his mother tucked her severed head into a school bag and went to watch music videos at an all-night Internet cafe before turning himself into police at sunrise, media reports said Wednesday. The 17-year-old high school student, arrested Tuesday on suspicion of murder, went to the cafe just hours after allegedly killing his mother. He spent about two hours watching a rap music DVD in a private cubicle, newspapers reported. About 7 a.m. Tuesday, he called a taxi and delivered the head to a local police station, the Asahi newspaper said. The boy was later arrested after leading police back to the apartment where his headless mother lay on her bed.

The boy also chopped off his mother's right arm, sprayed white paint on it, and stuck it in a flower pot with the hand pointing upward, the Asahi said. Police were reportedly evaluating samples of blood smeared on the taxi's back seat, and also considering conducting a psychiatric evaluation on the boy, reports said. The grisly killing shocked a country that has long prided itself on low crime rates, and it caps a series of separate dismemberments that have recently grabbed headlines. The boy was enrolled in a high school renowned for its excellent college placement record, but had not been in attendance recently, according to the Mainichi newspaper. The teen was also in and out of psychiatric care for a developmental disorder that makes it difficult for him to build interpersonal relationships, reports said.

Police official Hisayoshi Watanabe, from the northern prefecture of Fukushima where the killing occurred, could not confirm details of the ongoing probe, but said authorities were investigating matters mentioned in press reports. The killing comes after a spate of other high-profile dismemberments that have rattled Japan. Last year, a jobless man allegedly cut up his mother and entombed her body parts in concrete-filled buckets left abandoned in a yard. In January, Tokyo was put on edge when a woman confessed to dismembering her husband with a saw and dumping the parts around the capital. Then just weeks ago, the nation was riveted by a verdict in the death of a British bar hostess whose body was also dismembered and stashed in a seaside cave.

Hmm, sounds like some of that evidence was planted. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this conviction is not all in the bag yet.
