PCA: Broadband outage hits millions in Japan
Millions of broadband internet users across most of eastern Japan were unable to log on Tuesday evening after a problem at the country's largest broadband provider. NTT East said 2.85 million customers lost internet service at 6:44pm on Tuesday, the carrier said in a statement. The outage, the cause of which is still being investigated, lasted until 1:35am on Wednesday when the last of the affected customers was reconnected. The outage is one of the largest in years and took out both PC internet connections and IP telephone service across 14 of the 17 prefectures in which NTT East provides service. Customers in Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures of Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama were not affected. Of those affected, 1.2 million were on fibre-optic connections, 1.5 million on ADSL connections and 160,000 on ISDN lines, NTT East said. NTT East said it fielded 11,300 calls from customers as a result of the problems.

I had no internet from 6:45 until about 11:00pm here in Hachinohe. It was a real inconvenience, I wanted to show some stuff to some of my students but no luck since everything was down. I would be lost if that happened for any longer than a few hours.

Inquirer: Cisco routers down Japan
A MAJOR OUTAGE in an NTT network in Japan on Tuesday was caused by between 2,000 and 4,000 Cisco routers. The routers went down for about seven hours in the NTT East network after a switchover to backup routes triggered the routers to rewrite routing tables. According to Network World, the outage disconnected millions of broadband Internet users across most of eastern Japan. Cisco says was working closely with NTT East to identify the specific cause of the outage and help prevent future occurrences. However at the moment it is not sure what could have caused the problem. NTT East and NTT West are trying out a core router upgrade, according to the report. NTT East got the Cisco gear to try out while NTT West got Juniper core routers to evaluate.
