"The house which comic artist Umezu Kazuo try building in Kichijoji is so disgusting!!!!", obachans in the neighborhood said.
According to these narrowminded obachans, weird house like this destruct the scenery of their town.
This house is about to colored from red and white stripe.

Is it just me, but do J-obaasans overreact to just about everything? So the guy's house is somewhat loud, so what? Why does the obaasan sound like she is describing being anally violated by an uncircumsized rabid bull elephant? "It's violence"

The design is a smashing success. It does exactly what it was designed to do: piss off the stuck-up old ladies in the neighborhood.

My advice is, if you don't like it, don't look at it.

They are unrelenting. If there is going to be trouble caused in a neighborhood, that's where it begins. It's probably because they have nothing else to do. Pops is smart enough to get out of the house early in the morning and not come back until late at night.

It is likely that these obachans were mobilized by specific cult organization.
They dont look like normal obachans.

Yomiuri: Petition to ban artist's 'strange' home rejected
The Tokyo District Court on Friday rejected a petition by two people seeking a provisional injunction to prevent manga artist Kazuo Umezu from building a house in Musashino, Tokyo. According to the petition by two neighbors of Umezu and other sources, the outer wall of the two-story house, which is under construction, was due to be painted in Umezu's trademark red and white stripes. In the four hearings to date, the neighbors have claimed "the strange appearance will ruin the view in what is a quiet residential area." However, presiding Judge Junko Mori ruled that "the building is within socially tolerable limits." "A building is a piece of art and a place for self-expression," Umezu's defense said.

That is not appealing but since this is Tokyo I wouldn't say it is appalling either.

I'd have to agree. At least it has some personality and is a color OTHER than drab concrete grey.

Saw it on the news last night. To be honest, I think it looks nice. There's certainly nothing else around to brighten up the neighborhood.

If anyone built a nursery school or kindy with a bright color scheme like that, there wouldn't be a problem.

That's a damn good point. I have seen some ugly ass bright purple, yellow and green kindergartens and even karaoke places in my time here that make his house look like inspired beauty by comparison.

To veer off topic a bit, I just realized watching the above video that the Japanese obaasan habit of laughing while saying something negative or nasty to sort of "tone it down" or make it seem like they aren't an ass for saying it, really irritates the hell out of me. :p

Though a bit far from the station and the park, the Ghibli Museum is in Kichijoji too.

Noticed this update at Japan Probe.

Mainichi: Court rules manga artist's red-and-white striped house doesn't harm landscape
The Tokyo District Court on Wednesday rejected a lawsuit filed by residents who complained that a manga artist's red-and-white striped house was ruining the landscape. ... "The coloring does catch the eye of those living around it, but it can't be said it destroys the harmony of the landscape," the judge said.

Umezu, who listened to the ruling wearing a red-and-white horizontal striped tie, indicated he was happy with the decision. ..more..

This all sounds very interesting. So I can sue people because I hate their houses. I think that 99% of all Japanese including Waldo's neighbors are due for some class action.
