YOKOHAMA--About 500 city government employees are facing punishment for understating their educational backgrounds in their job applications.
The Yokohama city government said Thursday that 700 employees admitted during an in-house investigation that they lied about their academic credentials to land jobs reserved for those with high school degrees or lower qualifications.
Many of the 700 employees were graduates from universities or junior colleges.
The Yokohama investigation covered about 8,200 employees who were hired under a system that ended in fiscal 2002 for such jobs as garbage collectors, cooks and bus drivers.
