Herald Sun: Japanese commuters feel squeeze
MELBOURNE commuters who reckon they're packed on to trains like sardines have seen nothing yet. If the squeeze keeps getting tighter, look out for the likes of Atsuhide Sakurai. His job with Japan Railways in Tokyo is to ensure the trains run on time. And he can be quite pushy about it. Most weekday rush hours, the 24-year-old platform officer shoves more than 300 commuters into carriages at Shinjuku, the world's busiest train station...Mr Sakurai was happy to demonstrate his technique for packing as many people as possible into a single carriage. "There are some people who hate being pushed or being touched, so I bend my elbow and push with the back of my arm," he says of the method he learned from fellow officers...Pushing "is something that everybody gets used to", he says. "That's the system, and they should expect to be pushed to get on the train...Mr Sakurai says when the signal light on the exterior of a carriage goes off, it indicates the doors are properly closed. "And that gives me a sense of satisfaction," he says...more...

I hate trains.
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Ah, reminds me of my first time being pushed from behind into a dangerously over-crowded carriage. There's nothing quite like the contrasting emotions one experiences when violently thrust into the bosom of a pretty j-girl.

They really should warn us foreigners of these things beforehand. Afterall, such behavior is actionable here in the States!

On which lines/stations do they actually do the people pushing thing (apart from at Shinjuku, obviously) ? I lived in Tokyo for about 5 years and never once had the pleasure of getting pushed into a train except by other passengers backing in. Guess I was just catching and changing trains at the wrong places on the way to work..

Tozai-sen East of Kayabacho would be a start. Never seen them on Toei Shinjuku or the Hanzomon line.
Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups.

My experience was during the daimonji-yaki in Kyoto. I guess it only happens when a massive amount of people are going to festivals and what not.

Travelling at rush hour is usually something to avoid but you can see station staff pushing passengers at Shinagawa and probably at most major interchanges on the Yamanote line at peak hours.

Here's the Inokashira line, probably at Shibuya. The guys don't appear to be using that JR technique.

The Den-en Toshi Line (which turns into the Hanzomon Line) gets pretty crowded in the morning as you approach Shibuya. When I lived in Sangenjaya I remember some pushing being necessary to squeeze everyone in.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.
