Researchers at Nagoya University said Monday they have discovered a natural diamond for the first time in Japan in volcanic rock in Ehime Prefecture. The announcement at the meeting of the Geological Society of Japan in Sapporo goes against an established theory that natural diamond does not occur in Japan. But the discovered diamond can not be observed even using a microscope as its size is about one part per thousand millimeters. Sorry Taro but it not near the rice ranch. It is located in the Oboke Nappe Belt just south of Awa Ikeda. The size of the diamond was about the same as an E-coli Bacteria so probably not economically viable but then they said the same thing about Nortern Canada 20 years ago.



The Sambagawa belt is a well known location for corundums (better known as rubies and sapphires) and metal mineralization (copper).

The story calls the rocks volcanic which they certainly are not. Eclogite which is where the diamond almost certainly came from is a type of metamorphic rock.
