Your Eki-ben is American

The firm NRE World Bentoproduces organic box lunches for the Japanese consumer. The boxes contain organic rice and vegetables produced in California, humanely raised pork from Mexico, wild salmon from Alaska, and other staples of the organic trade. Although 90% of the product is sold to Japanese railway customers, the factory is not located in Japan or even in nearby China. Rather, NRE World Bento is located just outside of San Francisco in the mid-sized California city of Fairfield, not far from the Jelly Belly and Thompson Candy factories.

Two factors have determined the factory’s location. One is the source of the raw materials. Japan simply doesn’t produce the volume of organic rice, vegetables, and meat that World Bento needs. The company had to look elsewhere. Although the eel for the unagi bento makes a long round trip from China to the United States and back to Japan, most of the remaining ingredients are grown and raised in California. The free trade agreement between the United States and Mexico brings the cheaper Mexican livestock into World Bento’s supply chain.

Ordinarily, given Japan’s import regulations governing rice, the United States would be the last place that the company could outsource. U.S. growers have been trying to break into the Japanese market for years with little success. Herein lies the second factor: NRE Bento discovered a loophole in Japanese import regulations that permits a low tariff for imported rice if it is part of a product containing at least 20% non-rice ingredients.

...humanely raised pork from Mexico...

WTF?

If I eat "humane" pork, do I have to chew it gently?

I think the organic angle may be new but they have been doing this for a while now

Before, the tarriff angle alone was good enough when they first started doing it...although it looks like their attempt to enter the US market didn't go so well.

That just means that they let the mothers run through the house and yard, instead of locking them in cages.

Then they humanely bash them in the head at the Slaughter house (or the more humane electron bolt). All this for humane tonkatsu! I couldn't find any pigs to comment on which method they prefered, but I don't think it makes a helluva difference to them one way or the other. I do know that it doesn't matter to me in the taste.

Yeah, I remember the last time, the farmers were protesting on the Shinkansen platform in Tokyo Station.

The bentos aren't bad, but they taste very different from the Japanese-made ones. I don't know if that's because of ingredients, cooking styles, or because of all the preservatives, fat and salt the imported ones need to use to stay edible longer.

The salmon was a little salty, but tasted great.
The chicken was ok, but had too much "teriyaki" sauce (which I can't recall ever seeing outside of the US).
The beef tasted like a Lean Cuisine frozen meal, which isn't all bad a thing.
The rice in all three was overcooked, sticky and didn't taste very good.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.

This company is not producing any products right now. The Company was sold in March of 2007 and the new owners are trying to figure out what to do with it. So, as I was told when I called them, they are not producing ANY products right now for US or foreign markets.

Seems kinda odd to me, but I don't think you will be buying any of the "O" bentos for a while.

Here is a quote from their website:

Information for discontinuing US domestic O-bento

We regret to inform you that 5 kinds of US domestic O-bento would
discontinue to produce and ship out.
We really appreciate your support.
