Yamamoto Aims To Be Auckland's First Japanese Cop

Postby Mulboyne » Mon Nov 05, 2007 6:25 am

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Stuff: Japanese applicant faces police challenge
Yuichi Yamamoto wouldn't take no for an answer in his bid to become Auckland's first Japanese police officer. The 36-year-old failed an English test last year but was told he had a chance if he worked on his language skills and fitness. "From that time I started training, doing press-ups." Yuichi moved to New Zealand seven years ago and became interested in a police career because he loves helping people. He is part of the Pre-College Employment Programme, a recruitment trial focusing on minority groups. The scheme sees him help out at the Onehunga station, working on the public counter. He takes complaints, does some administration work and has spent two weeks at the police training college in Porirua. "The main purpose was to have a look at the college. I also did some extra driver training for driving police vehicles." If he passes the course, Yuichi will spend 19 weeks at the police college next year before graduating as an officer. Community constable Casey Broad has taken Yuichi out on exercises and is impressed with his abilities. "He's been really good, very professional and competent."

That guy is waaay too old to be a cop in Japan. It's probably the only way he could ever hope to be a real police officer since the age limit for entry into the police services in Japan is set to people a little over half his age. More power to him, I say.

New Zealanders allow foreigners to work as law enforcement officers?!

WTF? The Japanese don't even allow FG's to volunteer in local fire fighting crews due to nationality requirements for almost all civil service positions.

Not allowed to extinguish fire. That's a classic.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

Absolutely not! Japanese fires are so unique, they require a true Japanese to extinguish them. If you don't believe me, just ask Take!

GB should we flame him just to find out? :-)

(actually that might not work, as I have a feeling he's a natural retardant)

He was probably better looking than Yamamoto, so Ichigo PG told them to hire him...

So working at the fire station here is a part time thing?
Like the Rural Fire Brigades in Australia?
