No Walking Up The Escalator

Postby Mulboyne » Mon Nov 26, 2007 6:59 pm

[floatr]Image[/floatr]This Mainichi article (Japanese) discusses the posters introduced by Yokohama Subway asking passengers not to walk up the escalators. Subway authorities became concerned that old people were being hurried up and small children shoved out the way when they stand on the "wrong" side by people who believe that they have the right to walk up an escalator. While it is common practice that people in Kanto stand on the left and leave the right hand side free for others to walk up while Kansai residents generally walk up on the left and stand on the right, this is not an official rule and so Yokohama has tried to address the issue by asking people not to walk. Two months in, the campaign appears to have had little impact. Nagoya introduce the same idea in 2004, with station employees calling out to anyone walking but this also appears to have had little effect so Yokohama has a hard sell. Escalators must be a minimum of 1.1m wide but this regulation assumed users would go up in single file and has not been changed over time. Although escalator accidents appear to be on the rise, the article believes that it's difficult to see how the Japanese public will easily change their ways.

Edit: Rather than struggling through the above, you can just read the Mainichi's English version.

If it weren't for the fingerprinting law, I'd call this the dumbest new rule I've seen in a long time.

It's just another attempt by the J-gov to get into your wallet. First, by having the left side/right side schizophrenia of Kanto/Kansai, they set it up for little old eldery people to get trampled, thereby reducing the social security burden, but soon, they'll start fining people who trample the elderly...complete double dipping.

Yay, let's pander to the idiots who like to stand two across on the escalator. What's next? A law that permits people to park their bicycles directly infront of the entrance to every second conbini, or perhaps we'll ratify the legal blocking of access to vending machines and other public facilities as well.

Jesus people, get a fucking clue already!

I assume running with a backpack is still ok, no mention of that on the sign.

Yeah here in Osaka peeps walk up the left... and Kyoto peeps walk up the right like kanto peeps. But all of kansai it seems walks left. Makes sense. The kansai peeps are supposed to be the crazy comedians. Anyway it's the Kansai peeps who are the nicest. Don't even try to debate it. Even J peeps will tell you it's true. Well, the ones who aren't afraid to admit it. Thas why this area is called kinki. Cause we kinki.

More than the running, I personally enjoy the spinning around rapidly with a backpack on without looking behind or around you.

It actually cost me more money in Osaka to get flogged by a coked-up 90 year old Japanese obaasan weilding wilted broccoli in one hand and a rabid meerkat in the other while she shot Twinkies across the room from her snizz onto a pre-child molestor Woody Allen poster all while singing Bavarian beer drinking songs....than it cost for the same treatment in Kabukicho. And the Kabukicho obaasan could hold a note better.

This "solution" by Yokohama civil servants provides a very good example of how problems are often solved by the Japanese in the hospitality sector. If the customer or guest is acting to "spec", no problem - there's a prescribed kata for every expected situation.

However, when confronted with a novel challenge, you can often get the most asinine response imaginable.

More warning signs that are just going to be ignored.
