The Best Go-Kon Partners

Goo (Japanese) claims to have carried out a survey asking people which occupations make the most attractive go-kon partners.

Men prefer:

1. Nurses
2. Kindergarten Teachers
3. Air Stewardesses
4. College Students
5. Entertainers (Geinojin)
6. Models
7. Secretaries
8. Major Manufacturer OLs
9. Voice Actresses
10. Doctors

Women prefer:

1. Doctors
2. Lawyers
3. Entertainers (Geinojin)
4. Pilots
5. IT Company Employees (internet, software etc)
6. Major Manufacturer Employees
7. Travel Business Employees
8. Start-up Company Presidents
9. Musicians
10. Photographers

The full survey results list thirty choices for both sexes. Politicians, teachers and consultants are among women's least preferred partners - even a host ranks slightly higher - because they apparently believe such people would be difficult to talk to. Consultants and politicians are low on men's lists too but even more unpopular are freeters and girls who work in the wedding business. Hostesses don't make the top 10 but they are apparently preferable to lawyers and college lecturers.

That's interesting that consultant ranks so low for women. Especially since that's a such a general word. Maybe that's why, though. It doesn't really mean anything.

Given that there are only a handful of geinojin I don't really see how they could register as even a possibility. (And what kind of geinojin needs to attend a gokon?) Same with voice actresses. I don't anticipate this statement ever being uttered: "What, no voice actresses are coming on Friday? Well, I'm not going."

Why specifically _kindergarten_ teachers?

I've been to a Go-kon where a couple of the guys were geinojin and another where there were two TV announcers on the girl's side so it's not out of the question. I was always the dancing bear. The bloke I know who arranged these parties always said the best ones were when the girls were dentists or vets. He reckoned the guys' expectations for parties with stewardesses were always pitched too high for those to be a complete success. He liked to invite more guys than girls to his parties: usually 5 vs 7. While the girls tended to arrive together, the guys would generally arrive in dribs and drabs. Since the start of a party usually always saw the girls outnumbering the guys, he thought the best way to keep things balanced was to finish with guys outnumbering the girls.

The go-kon concept is a brilliant concept. I wish we had that in Canada when I was a young man.

By the way, do you guys think that Japanese girls make good dinner partners/companions/date? I was in Vancouver last week and took a friend out to dinner with two Japanese girls that I know. It was his first going out experience with Japanese girls and he was very pleasantly surprised. After dinner he asked me where he can learn Japanese. I think he got hooked. J-girls arte experts are making you believe that they are interested in you and what you do.

I have had a kindergarten teacher explain to me that such teachers are the viewed as professional mothers who are super hard working, genki, cheerful, and modest (Japanese men consider junior college grads as better because they aren't uppity).

"Consultant" is a euphemism for unemployed or a totally-useless ex-salaryman who has been restructured of job.

I've met some highly paid BP consultants for places like IBM and Accenture that would probably disagree. I guess they wouldn't introduce themselves as consultants at a gokon though.

What I like in Japan is you can introduce your job with just a title. If I tell people what I do, they usually don't really know what I'm talking about. If I just say "manager" they seem satisfied.

Did you meet the Anders...er, Accenture consultants while they were in the process of hooking the J-gov't up with its dandy new biometric technology?

Some consultants are indeed some pretty Big Swinging Dicks, particularly the Harvard Business School grads that comprise the bulk of McKinsey, the consultancy with a finger up the bum of just about every large-cap company in the US (famous exception: Walmart).

Best go-kon I ever attended was with a group of race queens. All of them were gorgeous, and since they were all beautiful they were competitive with each other to get guys' attention. As one of the only 2 gaijin guys at the go-kon, I was very lucky.

This reads more like a list of cosplay preference.
