Asahi: Views failed to lure tenants to top floor
Despite having "the most breath-taking views in all of Saga Prefecture," vacant restaurant space on the top floor of the government building here had problems attracting any takers. The cash-strapped Saga prefectural government thought it could raise money by renting out the space, which features panoramic views of the city and the Sefurisan mountain range. The government began seeking tenants in November and set an initial Nov. 30 deadline for applications. But no one applied. Government officials were stunned, saying the restaurant space has more "value" than any other prefectural government properties. They have since lowered the rent by 30 percent. The restaurant is in a corner of the 13th floor of the new administrative building. From this area, visitors can look out on the Saga plain. To the north, the Sefurisan mountain range, which borders Fukuoka Prefecture, is visible. Below is central Saga city, bustling with people and cars. To the south is the Ariake Sea, lined with columns supporting the cultivation of seaweed paste. There is nothing to obstruct the view at 50 meters. On sunny days, Mount Unzendake in the Shimabara Peninsula, east of Nagasaki city, is also visible. Saga prefectural officials reckon the 13th floor offers the best views in all of Saga Prefecture...more...
