
Asahi: Complaints rise over eyelash extensions
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder--and so is pain. Complaints in Tokyo doubled in 2007 over eyelash extensions, a service in which 1-centimeter-long artificial hairs are attached to eyelashes. The service is popular among young women, but some of them say their eyes have become swollen or bloodshot afterward. Consumer centers around the country have received complaints in recent years, and many come from Tokyo. Consumer centers run by the Tokyo metropolitan government suspect the symptoms are caused by untrained salon staff trying to cash in on the procedure's popularity. In an eyelash extension procedure, salon staff members attach silk or nylon hairs to eyelashes one by one with adhesives. The extensions stay in place for three to four weeks, even through face washing... In some cases, adhesives entered the eyes and caused inflammation of the cornea. One woman had to call an ambulance.
