Dollar Falls to Record Against Euro, Weakest Since 1995 to Yen
Bloomberg
March 13 (Bloomberg) -- The dollar slumped to a record low against the euro and the weakest in 12 years versus the yen on speculation U.S. retail sales growth slowed, adding to evidence the economy is entering a recession.

The U.S. currency fell to 100.57 yen at 12:46 a.m. in Tokyo after reaching 100.22, the lowest since Nov. 13, 1995, from 101.79 in late New York yesterday. The dollar fell as low as $1.5586 per euro, the weakest level since the European currency's 1999 debut. The euro fell to 156.36 yen from 158.30.

It would appear that the dollar will test 100 yen later today.

Going to the US on vacation next month, so I'm secretly hoping that the liferaft springs a few more holes before I exchange currencies. Call me a selfish bastard.....

aka $5...tomorrow, probably $6...shit, I better pay you before it becomes necessary for me to get a loan from the bank. What kinda interest rate are we looking at here?

Where is the best place to exchange currency? I am talking LOTS of money here so the best rate is where I'm going.

I've bought dollars at a bank where I had an account and it seemed a slightly better deal than just going to some random place, like the Mitsui Sumitomo exchange place in Shinjuku station. I'm drooling about this, too, and as I have never won in Las Vegas (a perfect 0-10), whatever I do, you all should do exactly the opposite. And please, when you see me begging for money on the street, drop a 100 yen coin in the hat.

I dunno, it almost tempts me to take my home loan money and skip back to the U.S., except that I still couldn't buy a decent home in the U.S. for that amount either...

There are row homes in the neighborhood where I grew up that are going for $300,000...

Mind you, when I was growing up the drug dealer across the street finally ended up going to jail because while robbing his boss' house he tied up his wife with electrical cords and stabbed her in the throat with a hunting knife, so we aren't exactly talking about a charming neighborhood or anything here...

You probably could use that event to chop a few points off of any loan. Tell the real estate vampire that you'll need to hire an exorcist to remove the crack demons or something.
My childhood neighborhood was very quiet and tranquil. Kids playing football or baseball in the street, some old codger shooting at coyotes at 2am, even one lesbian couple (my parents told me that they were also witches). Even had one black family, until their house caught fire. Now the neighborhood's all Saudi.

The neighborhood I grew up in was pretty bad. Lesbians and people shooting at coyotes would have been nice in comparison.

We had the drug dealer mentioned earlier and his (no joke) 11 kids, the constantly drunk guy across the street (who we were actually friends with, he used to like showing off all his gunshot and knife wounds from when he was younger), the white polish DJ next door who used to practice his dj skills at home at a volume that actually shattered windows once, the kid from the next block who used to fuck with me all the time until I got up guts to knock him on his ass, then he just tried to shoot me, the cambodian girl across the street who ended up crippled because someone wanted her $50 gold chain bad enough to beat her so bad she lost the use of her legs, etc. etc.

By the time I was 18 I had knives pulled on me more times than I can remember, and guns pulled on me specifically (not counting shootings and incidents that happened around me) 3 times.

Needless to say I find it hard to stiffle my maniacal laughter when Japanese people ask me if I miss the place where I grew up :p

My grandparents lived in the same neighborhood until just 6 years ago. My wife and I actually stayed there when we went to the states for our stateside wedding ceremony. To this day she doesn't understand why I wouldn't let her go out for walks around the neighborhood or why I insisted the engagement ring stayed in the damn house. :D

This couldn't have happened at a worse time. I have a trip to Spain planned in May (part business/part pleasure), and it looks like anything I do on my own time is going to clean me out.

I'll probably change at least a couple 100k yen to dollars this week while it lasts. I figure once the election gets wrapped up the dollar will shoot back up again.

There was a good opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday calling for Bush to come out unequivically for a stronger dollar when he meets with the Economic Club of New York later today. Let's see what he does.

Heeyyy.. I thought you were for a 'free market', with the 'evil government' never interfering with the natural progression of capitalism.. Oh, I guess that was only for taxes. ]ownership society[/URL]' retirement accounts are going now..
