US Marines help rolled Cube

Postby kurohinge1 » Fri Mar 14, 2008 11:59 am

The few bad apples in the U.S. Marine Corp seem to get quick press, so here's a story about 2 of the (majority of) good ones:

Camp Fuji Marines help Japanese trapped in overturned car

Cpl. Jennifer Calaway wrote:
CAMP FUJI, Japan (March 14, 2008 ) -- He could see the car coming up behind him, swerving in and out of lanes. His eyes followed the black, speeding car just as it cut across two lanes of traffic, passed the car directly in front of him and clipped a Nissan Cube, sending it fish-tailing and overturning.

The driver who watched the accident unfold within a few seconds [on] March 1 on Route 16 near Camp Fuji was Lance Cpl. Jonathan Alvarado, a motor transportation operator with Camp Fuji's Ground Motor and Equipment Management Office.

Before Alvarado knew it, he and another Marine in his vehicle found themselves rushing to the aid of two motorists in the overturned Cube.

. . . Alvarado slammed on his brakes, and by the time his vehicle had come to a complete stop, the Cube was on its side.

Alvarado looked to Lance Cpl. Michael Langenstrass, a logistics clerk with Headquarters Battalion, Combined Arms Training Center Camp Fuji, and without hesitation the two Marines instinctively rushed toward the wreckage.

. . . "They had absolutely no hesitation," said [Sgt. Maj. Kenneth Lucas, Camp Fuji's sergeant major], who the Marines had picked up from the airport to take back to Fuji. "They didn't know if the car would start on fire]more

They of course will be investigated by the JNP for being involved in a traffic accident and for being FGs in public with no basic excuse, as part of the on-going anti-terrorism offensive...

I anticipate the article will be corrected tomorrow as follows: "Approximately 49,998 U.S. military personnel made no attempt whatsoever to help the accident victims. Authorities suspect they may have been preoccupied with rape or burglary activities at the time."

The Yomiuri is running a story (Japanese) that three English-speaking foreigners stopped a taxi in Okinawa, punched the driver and stole his money box which had 8,000 yen in it. They then ran away while the driver called the police.

Actually, Mulboyne, if I'm reading that story right, actually they ran away while the driver did nothing. He then went home, and called the police more than 6 hours after the incident took place.

I'm glad the police and media are taking the story at face value, since it's obvious the driver is absolutely telling the truth about what happened. There is no way he blew the money while out drinking, drove home drunk, got yelled at by his wife for coming home with none of the day's earnings, and then called the police with a story about gaijin 6 hours earlier, for example.

According to this report the driver said that he decided against calling the police because he thought reporting an incident linked to the US military would get messy. He says he changed his mind after talking with a co-worker. In the Asahi report, the driver is alleged to have said that the three men were black.

Well, that part makes more sense at least (if it's true). Hope the police have the sense to confirm this with the co-worker, but I'm a little less skeptical than before.

After reading the stories I'm a bit puzzled. Apparently this happened 300 meters from a base gate, so is that the only reason stated so far for even thinking the guys may have been U.S. military?

If this really happened, and if they were miltary and decided to this that close to base, then they're a real bunch of frigging geniuses.

I wonder how long before a Japanese politician "accidentally" says in public that they should ban just black miltary personnel from Japan.

Police suspect a 15 year old and a 16 year old - both sons of US military personnel. They believe that the two may have been involved in a similar incident and have asked military authorities to hand them over.

Japanese Okinawa Times report here.
