PETA Wants Japanese Baseball To Go Vegetarian

Postby Mulboyne » Fri Mar 28, 2008 12:30 am

[floatr]Image[/floatr]A Japanese report says that the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has written a letter to baseball commissioner Yasuchika Negoro asking that stadiums around the country switch to vegetarian bentos. PETA were prompted by his announcement that Japan is planning to shorten match times as a contribution to the fight against global warming. The group claims that replacing the usual offerings of yakitori and takoyaki would do more to help the problem as well as going some way to improving the nation's health.

im sympathetic with what peta stands for, but for one thing they sure can be pushy and annoy the fuck out of people..
the far worse beef *cough* ive got is being so blinded by a cause that they become hypocrtical (some of the higher members in the group have admitted to using medical science that is developed through animal testing, while the group strongly opposes such research) and ubable to consider alternatives.

otherwise, looking at that yakitori picture sure makes me hungry!

I agree! I don`t have anything personally against PETA, though their tactics can be sometimes best described as quite over the top odd or downright crazy. I remember in the states during the Christmas holidays when The actor Joaquin Phoenix did a TV commercial about not eating the Turkeys and going veggie-while showing the Turkey getting slaughtered, yea, it turned my stomach for the duration of the commercial, after that I would vow to go Vegan! But after passing by the local Subway joint, I'd get withdrawal syndrome and I would have to snag me a "Cold Turkey on Wheat" with all the trimmings and Ohh, the chips! Well,...so much for that. I'm still trying.:(

I ain't trying. When I order a double wopper, I do not have the slightest worry about how they off'ed "How Now Brown Cow". I do worry if they have sufficient condiments to doctor that baby up, before I order another one.

Good luck to PETA and I think I'll go run a dog through the sausage grinder for some Korean Poushintang tonight!

With the tactics PETA uses I think they piss off more people then they attract. There is a right and a wrong way to approach things and I don't think PETA ever gets it right.

Make sure you check to make sure there is enough propane in the Blow Torch to scorch the whole dog. I hate it when the torch runs out half way through and I have to search for the baseball bat.

Wasn't there a case that happened somewhere on the east coast, where PETA was found to be dumping dog carcasses that they had allegedly "saved" from one of their "save the strays program" (or something like that)?

They do the weirdest shit, it's a wonder anybody follows them at all!

Yeah, they also did that to a bunch of lab rabbits...made the local coyotes very happy.

There are a lot of desperate and lonely people out there and if they have a cause, then they can find some group to belong to. Take away the group and most of those PETA people can't find anything else to talk about. For some of them, it is easier to side with animals (as they won't directly reject you as often) than with humans. Probably neglected as children by their folks or spurned in their relationships/friendships once too often, so animals are safer for them mentally.

And who isn't for research that would create genetically-modified goats that have six or seven nice 36D breasts?

On a serious note, does anyone know where one can buy veggie burgers, hotdogs, TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein), or other meat substitutes in Tokyo? Maybe those PETA folks might know? Is there a vegetarian association in Tokyo that also might know?

I am not a vegetarian, but I was born with deficiencies in bile and a few digestive enzymes that make it especially difficult to break down anything larger than a single bite of beef, pork, etc. without getting sick. (I experience similar symptoms to severe lactose intolerance.) Fortunately seafood is not a problem for me, and there is no lack of it here. But after a year in Japan, I really do miss my burgers, dogs, cold cuts, and other fake meats. And no, a fish sausage in a bun with ketchup, mustard, and fixings does not taste anywhere as good as a veggie hotdog. (I tried that.) :(

Any shopping advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

i always felt sorry for my vegetarian friends in japan.. every single one of them had to back down when it came to eating fish. i dated/lived with a vegan before moving to japan, so i was pretty used to all the fake meat stuff, and was actually surprised to not see much of it over there.. i think your best bet would be ordering food over the internet and having it delivered, here is a listing of some services:
http://www.vegietokyo.com/info4vegie/shopping.html

i also remember seeing some stuff like that on the kobe foreign buyers' club website, you might want to do a search for that.
good luck.. im going to get back to eating this giant plate of salivary gland and lymph node tacos...

I used to help prep students for their studies in Japan, several of them were vegetarians and asked about what they would do. None of them had medical restrictions on diet, it was all personal choice, so I told them, it was very simple, they had two options:

1. Stop being so picky about food

or

2. Starve

I think my teachers sent those finicky eaters to me for advice, because I'll eat almost anything and I still almost starved to death when I was an exchange student.

I do a lot of (3) - cooking. Fortunately, you can easily find lots of fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables in Japan.

It's a long story. It turned out my host family was quite poor and liked to host students because they needed the money. They used the money from my tuition fees to feed themselves, while neglecting to feed me.

After I finally switched to a new host family, the supervisor at the school told me I shouldn't feel bad, they had plenty of students bail from this particular house in previous years. So I asked her, if this home has a long history of being unsuitable for hosting, why do they keep placing students there? She said, "well, they do a free concert for us every year, all they ask in return is to host a student." Sheesh.

And yeah alicia, I know how to cook, but I already paid for the damn food as part of my school's room and board fees. And it was clear that I wasn't welcome in their kitchen (let alone at their table) so I couldn't really cook for myself. And this was way out in the inaka, I had a hard time even locating a Lawson's, which was a 20 minute walk away.

Just a quick show of hands.

Before reading this article, did anyone think it might be about PETA asking baseball not to use leather balls?

Behan I was thinking the same thing, like stop using leather gloves or leather shoes. I didn't think the bentos would be a big issue.
