3 arrested for stealing video cassette from tourist

The police say many foreigners in the Shibuya area are nervous of being filmed fearing they might be targets of police hunting for visa violations and drug-related crimes among foreign nationals in the area.

The JT article says:

The police said that the suspect, Jalal Partovi, 46, and two others threatened the 17-year-old Frenchman with a knife and took away his video cassette.

I hate to bring up the stereotypes, but for what it's worth, the surname "Partovi" is common in Iran. The whole fracas sounds like 17 year old kid pissing off at an Iranian in a badass mode while he was just trying to make a living (hopefully ripping off the real theives in NTT.

An amateur photographer named Mike Maginnis was arrested on Tuesday in his home city of Denver - for simply taking pictures of buildings in an area where Vice President Cheney was residing.

Unreal. I think I'll be staying here for a while.

Not much of a worry, Rob. I'll be in the Denver hotel in question in only 14 days. I'll ask around about what "really" happened. Hotel staff just love to gossip. Actually, Richard Cheney is one of biggest Dicks I have ever had to interview for the Cheyene Herald back in the mid 70s. I t sounds like his security service people are handpicked to "match" him.

Three hours later, Maginnis was finally released, but with no explanation. He received no copy of an arrest report, and no receipt for his confiscated possessions. He was told that he would probably not get his camera back, as it was being held as evidence.
Maginnis's lawyer contacted the Denver Police Department for an explanation of the day's events, but the police denied ever having Maginnis - or anyone matching his description - in custody. At press time, the Denver PD's Press Information Office did not return telephone messages left by 2600.

Gee, he was not charged...'nuf said. He's got a nice lawsuit . He'll get a nice out-of-court settlement if he's smart and keeps his mouth shut.

HOWEVER, Mike does admit to "Blowing Up Old Computers" .

The Macintosh Portable was released in September 89 and discontinued in
Feb 91. I had a non-working one (broken screen) until February. Now
its a mess of melted plastic.
