[floatl][/floatl]Kagurazaka Hanten is famous for its food challenges like the jumbo gyoza, which you have to order four days in advance, or the 100 gyoza plate. Both of those will cost you 9,600 yen unless you can finish them within the time limit. Also pictured above on the left is the issho chahan challenge which consists of ten standard servings of fried rice weighing around 2.5kg. This one costs 5,840 yen if you can't finish it in an hour. The restaurant has been offering these deals for over forty years and the current men's record for the chahan challenge is held by Giant Shirota who finished it in five minutes. The women's record was held by the ubiquitous Gal Sone who scoffed the whole plate in 13 minutes but she has just been handily beaten by another well-known "food fighter", 44 year old Hatsuyo Sugawara(left), who managed it all in 8 minutes, 15 seconds as part of a recent TV show. Since Gal Sone revived the popularity of champion eaters, Kagurazaka Hanten has seen an increase in girls taking on the challenges and about 1 in 10 successfully finish the chahan. Winners also get a bottle of Chinese sake along with the free meal.
