Jenkins Looks To Make It Permanent

Postby Mulboyne » Wed Jun 25, 2008 4:18 pm

Mainichi: North Korean abductee's husband Charles Jenkins applies for permanent residency in Japan
Charles Jenkins, the husband of 49-year-old Hitomi Soga, who was abducted by North Korean agents in the 1970s, has applied for permanent residency in Japan, it has been learned. Sources said that Jenkins, 68, visited the Niigata Branch Office of the Tokyo Immigration Bureau on Tuesday and filed the application. The decision on whether to grant him permanent residency is expected to take about six months. Jenkins came to Japan from North Korea in July 2004 with his daughters Mika and Brinda. Up until now, Jenkins had been staying on a string of limited-term visas, but in July last year, a branch official reportedly told him that he was able to apply for permanent residence, since three years had passed since he entered Japan.

Three years? I asked about it when I'd been here for nine years and they told me not to bother until the tenth year.

And it took me seven months to get mine.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.

samurai, is that a daikon in your pants or are you just glad to see immigration?

yeah, 3 years?!? truly a WTF from where i'm standing... in my 7th year at a tenured position at (what was when i started a national) university and warned late last year against applying for PR, as rejection would leave a black/question mark on my proverbial permanent record when/if i re-applied in future... i've gotten a home loan and built a house in the intervening months, with a baby on the way: what do you think? any chance for a dude not named "jenkins"? !!!

I would apply. The house, tenure and being a University level instructor should be more than enough. They at one time required two personal references, so if you got a couple of heavy hitters you can list (politicos or high level bureaucrats are very attractive), go for it. The head of your school or a high ranking dean wouldn't hurt for one of them either.

If you have what appears to be an acceptable package, I seriously doubt that rejection can be made for anything other than some administrative error. There is a hell of a lot of BS pumped out over the net about this being so hard to do and when and when not to try, but when you look at all the people who receive their PR, it doesn't ring very true.

You essentially just need some Time in Country, a good employment status to show an air of permanency and of course, the big time references.

Whether you agree with the policy or not, I think Jenkins' treatment is because he is married to a Japanese national, not because he is a famous wanker. It appears that marriage lowers the threshold significantly, and it's not at all unusual for Immigration to grant PR to applicants with as little as 3-5 years in the country if they have "married into the family".

It sticks in the craw to see Jenkins getting the red carpet treatment but, as far as the administration is concerned, they are looking to making life as easy as possible for his wife & kids and that just happens to entail getting Jenkins processed on a fast track.

How many FGs do you think could check off three out of the five from that list? Alcoholic is a given, so that leaves just two more!

BTW, have you gone back to the big BX, or you still in the hood?

You need a volunteer?

BTW SJ, if you need any numbers while you're in the land of the big kimche, let me know. There's a flag pole sitter in Itaewon that should be available. The fact that she gave me a dose the last time I was there shouldn't come into play 'cause she should have had her shots by now.....

Jenkins appreciates freedom after settling in Japan from N. Korea
Mainichi | October 06, 2012
NIIGATA, Japan ---
Nearly 10 years after his abductee wife was repatriated to Japan from North Korea, former defector traitor Charles Jenkins says he is happy living with his family on Sado Island in the Sea of Japan, from where his wife hails, and appreciates the freedom Japan offers.
A former U.S. Army sergeant, Jenkins, 72, recently gave an interview to Kyodo News ahead of the 10th anniversary...more...
