Monkey ad gets pulled

Monkey advert 'resembling' Obama is pulled in Japan
Guardian
A Japanese mobile phone firm said today it had pulled a TV advert depicting a monkey as a political candidate amid accusations that it was a racist reference to Barack Obama, who is seeking to become the first black US president.

The ad, for eMobile, shows a monkey in a suit addressing an election rally, surrounded by supporters carrying placards with the word "Change".

The apparent intention is to persuade subscribers to other mobile phone carriers to transfer to eMobile.

But the combination of the monkey, and the resemblance of his message to the theme of Obama's campaign - "Change we can believe in" - prompted bloggers to accuse the company of making a racist slur against the Democratic hopeful.

The company, which stressed it had used the macaque mascot in several other adverts, said it had never intended to insult Obama but had decided to pull the "Change" ad in response to criticism in the blogosphere.

"We had no bad intentions, but this is a cross-cultural gap issue and we have to accept it," eMobile's chief executive, Sachio Semmoto, told Reuters. "There are African-Americans in Japan, so we decided to take prompt action and shut down the ad."...more...

Truth is, whoever looked at the ad and assumed the monkey was representative of Barack Obama is the racist. Politicians have been using the "change" slogan since forever. It's ages old.

It's rumored that an orangutan founded the KKK, so that's where alll this crap started from. I'm voting for Vodafone.

My first thought was the reference to this "Change" instead

The people don't call it the idiot box for nothing

I seem to remember an Osaka cosmetics company in 2004, showing people of African heritage acting like chimpanzees with red afros and eating bananas while making oohuu oohoo noises.

Right. Why isnt the monkey McCain? Huh?
The answer is that this is a sneak indirect revenge by gaijin reporters (Justin McCurry) who was bullied like cockroach in J-society. They can justify it as jornalism if being blamed. This kind of revenges are also often seen in so-called nihonjin-ron by gaijin writers.

Dogs hate Monkeys

Postby cenic » Wed Jul 02, 2008 12:26 am

This particle ad aside, the purpose of the monkey as a mascot is a bit of a joke on Softbank who has a dog. Since dogs and monkeys hate each other in Japan it fit well with eMobiles advertising...

Regarding racism, Japanese have historically been portrayed as Monkeys as well.

Change? I thought, along with millions of Japanese who can't read English, that their slogan was チャンゲ.

It was unintentional, but I guess they do have the responsibility to do their research for releasing an ad.
My opinion is really the same as G Wiz's though. The people that are saying it's like Obama are the real racists...

I hope you're either black or a monkey yourself making a comment like that, buster.

I don't think it was necessarily "racist" but it was simply insensitive and dumb. The ad director for that campaign should be fired. He should have known better.

With Obama standing a good chance to be America's next President (and the next person Japan will be paying attention to) it is foolish to run such an ad that could have within the very least insulted Barack Obama.

Thanks to the internet, we are a gloabal culture now. Nothing is exactly in a cultural vacuum anymore.

A COMPETENT ad director would have the decency and the brains to take at least two seconds to consider how his work might be received outside his own country.

I say fire da bum.

There is none and the Ad Director should have been fired for insulting monkeys by lumping them in with Obama....

I agree and if anybody on this site has the same pinheaded, ignorant racist views when it pertains to minorities or to better put it"non-whites", then they should go to some of the racist blogs(a few of them out there)out there and spew their raving, lunatic ideas or feelings. I am sure, their kin will embrace them as well as the other idiots with the IQ of a Walnut.

Or is it you're trying to stick up for monkeys and you have something against black people? Either way, I find your brand of bigotry distasteful. Really, show some class!

As they are monkeys I am quite sure, they have no idea as to what is being done with their image.

Ok, then let me rephrase that. "Monkey"-as in Primate(Animal) No correlation to the human-upright, two-legged, speaking, logical reasoning, superior being.
That should clarify any confusion, need anymore details, take a refreshing course in Anthropology.
