Political Donburi

The canteen at the National Diet Library started serving a "National Diet Donburi" in April this year. It's half gyudon and half curry rice topped with an onsen tamago (poached egg). For some inexplicable reason, the gyudon is supposed to represent the ruling LDP party while the curry rice is the extra spice of the DPJ. The egg represents - I'm sure you've got it already - the electorate. The donburi became a topic for Japanese bloggers and is now the most popular item on the canteen's menu, making up over 20% of total orders. The chef who created the dish says that the gyudon and curry rice can't work together without the egg which he believes is a message to both political parties to heed public opinion.
