Pedestrian Buried In Wet Concrete

Postby Mulboyne » Fri Aug 01, 2008 11:44 pm

[floatr]Image[/floatr]This Friday Afternoon, several tons of wet concrete, being used to build a new annex for the Shibaura Institute of Technology, fell from the eighth storey of the construction onto the nearby pavement. It struck a passer-by who was, for a short time, buried in the concrete. He was pulled free by five workers but has sustained serious injuries and is in hospital. Workers were pouring the concrete between the outer wall and a steel frame when the frame slipped and the concrete gushed outside. An eyewitness said that it felt like an earthquake.

The larger picture shows how lucky it was that more people weren't hurt.

If this happened back home in the US, I'm certain the victim would be entitled to collect muchos dineros in compensation just by whispering the magic words "lawsuit". Lawyers would be lined up at his hospital bed.

However, what's the situation in Japan? Especially if it's a yakuza-related construction firm. They might even argue it's the responsibility of their sub-contractor... a box of cookies and a bow?

I'm from Chicago. You are forgetting about the other type of concrete spills. The floor of Lake Michigan is lined with a bunch of dudes wearing "spilled" concrete booties caused by various types of disagreements with the fellas....
