The Aomori City of Mutsu has just introduced two German Shepherd "monkey dogs" to protect local crops from wild monkeys in the area. Nagano was the first prefecture to use trained dogs against encroaching packs of monkeys back in 2005 and now several agricultural areas adjacent to mountains have taken up the idea. According to the Asahi (Japanese), Gonta and Hana were trained by being repeatedly asked "Where's the monkey? Where's the monkey?" until they learned to bark furiously and give chase.
