Indian Curry In Japan

Postby Mulboyne » Fri Oct 03, 2008 1:08 am

[floatl]Image[/floatl]Press Trust of India: In Japan, India is virtually synonymous with 'curry'.
Indian food has now got the Japanese hooked and is gradually replacing Chinese and Thai, their other favourites, with hundreds of restaurants mushrooming across its islands and an unprecedented rise in food imports from the country. In fact, the Japanese are so fascinated with the 'Indian' food that even restaurants owned by Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and Sri Lankans display the Indian tricolour and add the prefix 'Indian' to the names of the eateries. So you have restaurant chains like the Siddique's 'Indian Pakistani', which has over 20 outlets and 'Indian Sri Lankan'. "The Japanese identify 'Indian' with good and delicious food. If a restaurant serving any South Asian fare does not have the Indian tag, the Japanese will not go to it," says Mohammad Sageer, a chef working for Potahar who came from Islamabad Pakistan eight years ago. There are others like the Maharaja which has 25 restaurants, Khana (3), Sapla (1), Great India, Bombay, Ali Baba, Jantar Mantar and Agra. There is also a restaurant named 'Gandhi' in Washington Hotel in Shinzuku that was set up 25 years ago by a Japanese. Potahar, in Shinzuku, Tokyo, is owned by a Pakistani but the Indian flag hangs outside. A small eatery with hardly a sitting place for a dozen people, it caters to over 100 people, mostly Japanese, who queue up for "curry and nan" in just two hours during lunch time.

I recall having a conversation with Captain Japan when we wondered whether the fastest-growing restaurant segment in Japan over recent years might be Indian cuisine. I thought there was a good chance because of the increasing Indian population. They have also escaped relatively free from the food poisoning, tainted ingredients and mislabelling scandals which have affected Japanese, Chinese and Korean yakiniku restaurants. Many offer good value all-you-can-eat deals and a number of city centre restaurants stay open until the early hours. This makes them competitive with family restaurants who are currently retrenching. I don't think this trend includes Japanese-style curry. Partly because it is difficult to distinguish it separately since it is ubiquitous in meals like katsu kare, but mostly because beef curry is one of its mainstays and you won't find that on Indian menus. When the mad cow scare was at is peak, Japanese curry chains like Coco suffered just as much as the gyudon chains like Yoshinoya.

i miss the indian curry that you could get over in japan.. some of the best i have ever had. the sickly sweet japanese variety, on the other hand sucks.

i never found good mexican food in japan, one of the things i missed the most living over there. there was a big chain place in shinjuku that i used to go to when i was real hard up, but it was pretty bland.. i did have good food at a "mexican" restaurant in kobe once, but it was quite expensive and not real authentic.

I've tried eating Indian curry and nans on many occasions but it gives me the worst toilet runs every time. You know it sucks when it burns coming out the other end too.

Iraira wrote:I've given up trying to find good Mexican food in Tokyo. Only solution is to make it yourself. Now and then I find some real scary refried beans, and sometimes they are reasonably priced. Found these particularly dangerous-looking beans at Hanamasa. Cheap, tasted great, and spoke volumes later. Corn tortillas are a bitch to find, I can find decent flour tortillas, but they are pricey (400 yen for a pack of 10). Sucked when I had a Mex party and needed 150 tortillas, but that was paid for by GW's fiscal stimulus check, along with the blender for the mixed drinks.

Call me, Mr. Quesedilla!

Costco man. Solved a lot of my Mexican food needs. Giant bags of shredded cheese, refried beans, tortillas, tortilla chips and hot sauce. Costco saved my life there. One Just off Keio Sen. About 15min outside of Chofu. You can find Tabasco Chipotle too. Man, that stuff is a fuckin godsend!

The chain Mexican place in Shibuya is El Torito. It was ok, definitely not authentic though. Chips and salsa were fine. There is also a small taco shop in Harajuku just off Ometesando dori. Never ate there though.

Luckily never had the shits from Indian Curry or Mexican food in Japan. Here in the states it's a different story. I have to be careful what Mexican joints I eat at.

Naan is great but don't you miss that aromatic Basmati rice though.
Even Thai rice would be better than the crap they serve in most Indian joints here.

Ate a few times at a kick-ass Tex-Mex joint in Gifu City, of all places. Just one or two streets over from the east side of Shin Gifu Station. Owner lived in the States for many years, and recreated a little Texas bar when he returned.

If anyone wants cheap and authentic Indian food then try Spice Kitchen-II in Nishi-Shinbashi, Tokyo (They have two other restaurants in Uchisaiwaicho and Ochanomizu, but they are not so good) sometime. Ask them to make it like they would if they were cooking for themselves. Good and cheap food and tastes like it would in India.

Damn straight. Spice Kitchen II is great, normally go a couple of times a week. There is a couple around that area but none are anywhere near as good.

That's similar to Koreans and Chinese back in the US advertising their Authentic Japanese Yakiniku & Sushi restaurants.

There is a good Mexican restaurant in Sagamihara outside the US Army housing area. Not sure if the place is still there.

I forgot to mention, my recipe for Japanese curry. 1 full package of curry, all the usual ingredients, add about half a cup of milk towards the end of cooking and serve topped with extra-sharp cheddar cheese. UMAE! The bitterness of the sharp cheese adds a new dimension to the curry. I just had a belly full so though I would add to the discussion.

My now not so secret ingredient is a little bit of instant coffee to add a little bit of flava/aroma to my mix.. :fresse:
