Patrick MBomba might be proud.

Cameroonian Patrick MBomba was one of the more popular players in the J-League when he was with Gamba.

Soccer fans might remember better, but wasn't it Cameroon that had airplane trouble coming to Japan for the World Cup? Their host town seemed to be in love with them, too, from what I remember. Might have that wrong.
His [Brendan Behan's] last words were to several nuns standing over his bed, "God bless you, may your sons all be bishops."

the japanese are the biggest fair-weather celebrity lovers in the entire world. a couple years ago i had invitations left, right and centre for dinners and parties and events because a kenyan was the nobel peace laureate and we kicked ass in the world expo and cleaned up at the world athletic championships in osaka. then they moved on and made another culture flavour of the month and i couldn't even get anyone to even return my phone calls. now obama's on his way into the white house and all of a sudden, the kenyaphiles of japan are beating a path to my door again.

i'm treating them without about the same warmth as i do the jehovah's witnesses that turn up every now and then.

I agree with you about that. With the J-League, for examle, the media-made heroes one year were gone the next.

One of these guys:

Alcindo 'Kappa', who Zico brought over to play with Kashima Antlers. He was forgotten in a year or two. In fact, after looking through a couple of pages of Google images I couldn't find any pics of him in a Kashima uniform.
