[/floatl]JR East has issued a press release (Japanese) announcing a smoking ban at 226 stations serving the Tokyo metropolitan area from April 1st next year. Currently, the company allows smoking in designated areas, usually located towards the end of station platforms, but these will now be removed. JR East introduced a smoking ban on all shinkansen in spring of 2007 but did set up some enclosed smoking rooms on shinkansen platforms (see above) and it seems that these will likely remain for the time being. The stations service 17 JR lines and include destinations within a 50km radius from Tokyo station. Most of the private railway operators in the Tokyo area, such as Tokyu, Keio, Odakyu etc., banned smoking throughout their stations in spring of 2003 so JR East has been under pressure to follow suit for some time. Diehard smokers will still be able to evoke memories of puffing away on the platform with these Yamanote line lighters, however:
