On Monday, when Aso dropped in to speak to the women of the Shizuoka prefectural chapter of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), who were having a workshop at LDP headquarters, he drew a laugh from the assembled ladies when he said, "Somehow, I've managed to get a bad reputation. This is a truly unfortunate situation."

At the meeting of the Shizuoka chapter of the LDP ladies, Aso wasn't finished making a fool of himself. "The American president is coming to Japan," he mistakenly said, referring to the visit to Japan of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
