JAL SUCKS......

Postby wuchan » Tue May 12, 2009 11:35 am

oops...
LA Times wrote:Metal baggage container sucked into jet engine at LAX
Airport officials say the vacuum created by an engine on the Japan Airlines Boeing 747 pulled the container off a baggage cart. Other arrangements were made for the 245 passengers and 18 crew members.
...
A large metal baggage container was sucked into the engine of a Japan Airlines Boeing 747 on Monday as the giant jetliner prepared to depart with 245 passengers from Los Angeles International Airport, authorities said.
...
Japan Airlines took the crippled 747-400 out of service and made other flight arrangements for the passengers and 18 crew members, who were returned to the Bradley terminal. The airplane, which has four engines, was towed to a hangar for inspection.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident, said Ian Gregor, an agency spokesman. Japan Airlines could not be reached for comment.

Since the planes aren't too maneuverable on the ground, it sounds like it was the fault of the cart driver for getting too close.

Hardly JAL's fault I would think....

Not just that... now they have to keep the plane at LAX until they arrange for a spare engine+inlet to be fitted.
These probably can be had stateside within a day, but there is one handing agent at LAX that's going to lose a lot of money this year.... ;)

Who takes care of LAN Chile's luggage containers?

Sure would have been fun to watch tho, a giant fucking steel container getting sucked into the engine of a 747. That would have been a sight.

Actually, LAX is NOT that unorganized. If you really want to see incompetence as an attraction go to "Newark airport" that will make you give up flying all-together. Now that is true on-organization at it's finest.

Was in LA two weeks ago, and the Bradley terminal is undergoing major reconstruction, so it looks messy now. Had to go meet another friend there on a Friday around 5pm, and airport traffic was not bad at all, or at least not nearly as bad as I remember it once was.

i was being sarcastic. when this hit the news in japan, guaranteed that it was reported not as being the fault of JAL or the pilots (who might not have been native english speaking and possibly not understood the air traffic controllers), but directly blamed on LAX and the poor management of western airports.

as to you, mister oklahoma, spending nearly 5 years in osaka would contradict your theory that i'm a japan hater. yes, i'm a bit disenchanted with the way the treatment i've received by the japanese system and a few japanese people, but i still love japan, and recently chose to make myself an ex-gaijin for now and just visit a few times a year. you, however, definitely seem to be a racist and hate everyone who is not japanese, yet you totally contradict yourself by using the name of a foreign place as your nickname. typical of trolls like you.

you know what? every time i see your name, i'm reminded of the film 'dirty rotten scoundrels', the part where steve martin plays a retard and runs around the room banging pots over his head while shouting 'OKLAHOMA OKLAHOMA OKLAHOMA!'. except you're not just putting it on, you're actually retarded all of the time.

and this, dear troll, shall be the last time i reply to you.

Man, it never ceases to amaze me that the more you post, the dumber you start to sound. Remember that quote from a movie a ways back? There ain't nothing in Oklahoma but steers and queers. You don't look like a steer so which one are you boy?

How do you know its not Japanese arrogance?

JAL does suck, but no more than Delta/Northwest/Air Niugini/South China Air etc....second-rate airlines with no padding and tiny seating arrangements. JAL may be a first-class airline but they don't price competitively with other airlines that offer the same amenities such as Thai, Singapore, China Airlines (the newer one) and others...

He/she claims to be from kiwi land(See profile). I don't get why he/she named the account after a useless state in the bible belt. The grammar he/she uses does not seem like regular american grammar. I think this troll is a "returnee" trying to stir up shit because he/she feels burned by westerners somehow.

Traditionnally, big planes avoid to move when there is ground vehicle moving in front of them doing their... ground vehicle stuff...

I think the engine are to be shut down before loading/unloading... (even cooking oil ain't no free anymore...)

So either the luggage cart was to early or the engine shutdown was too late...

But I think it's the ground crew that is responsible to check for safety before doing something stupid... (or avoiding doing so...). Not exactly the first or last time that it will happen anyway... (But i'm sorta kinda ready to bet that miscommunication might have made things a little worse...)

BTW... Stop feeding it... it will disappear... But that guy make me feel like a mensa member... so in a sense... it's good to have him around...

I respectfully point out that you don't know what you are talking about. JAL is one of the best airlines in the world. It has outstanding service and second to non beauties as flight attendents. Now for those who badmouth JAL, hear this: Proceed to fuck yourselves now.

I don't think the container had anything to do with this flight... when the aircraft is on the taxiway and taxiing out to the runway there normally aren't any containers anywhere near it, nor should there be.

This is probably an empty one (~150lb) which was just sitting in a corner of the apron happily awaiting its assignment of suitcases when it was sent bouncing across the tarmac either by high winds or the jet blast from another aircraft. They normally aren't locked down to the ground or to their carts so it happens... usually it doesn't end up in an engine though.

It's doubtful the crew even saw it in the first place as the no.1 engine is a long way away from (and behind) the flightdeck in those 747's. When you're sitting in the captain's seat you have to undo your harness, get out of your seat to turn around and press your face against the cockpit port aft sidewindow to even see it.

Shit Happens

Image

The JAL official said he had never heard of such an incident occurring before.
"We're always careful because there's a danger of objects in front of the engines being sucked into them," the official said. "We're making inquiries with the airport authorities to find out how the object got caught in the engine."
Yomiuri

Apparently the JAL official hasn't investigated many FOD (foreign object damage) incidents

Jack, it's not just your inability to understand that other people's observations or experiences are different than yours. It's your bizarre and extreme emotional attachment to things like an airline company and the resulting spasmodic outbursts. That's one of the reasons many people here believe you are mentally disturbed in real life. You should seek professional help. Seriously.

Usually engines get FODded by objects smaller than Jack's **** which make the damage hard to spot. Most of the FOD occurring in the life of a jet engine is small stones passed through the outer fan and out through the bypass channel which produce small dents in the leading edges of the fan blades, to a point where it will have a noticeable effect on the performance of the fan stage of the engine. During regular light maintenance on big planes usually some of the guys will have the honour of checking all fan blades for this type of damage and spending hours filing away at the bent titanium to improve the performance without requiring costly engine replacement. But only up to a point, I should add... I'm talking about dents less than a centimeter in size on a titanium CF6 or PW4000 fanblade nearly a meter in length here.

More serious FOD such as bird strikes will affect the compressor stage of the engine core, and engines with this kind of damage will surge and/or overheat at high thrust settings (such as at takeoff). See below:

[yt]R-UU0pgF5oI[/yt] [yt]9KhZwsYtNDE[/yt]

Before you ask, the loss of 50% or more of your available thrust (1 engine on a 2 engined 757) is a full-on emergency (mayday), even though as you can see from the second video it really is a non-event in a modern airplane with its lawfully required power reserve. Large twin engine airplanes like this A330 and 757 are always very much overpowered to handle events exactly such as these.

Wasn't going to ask... Sis' is 'hobby' prop' pilot and I have accumulated around 5000 hours on various sims since '89. (VMFA 666 Euroheads on Macintosh back in 93-94).

Prefer micro RC choppers these days. It was extreme fun to hunt my cats at first... Then they understood what the remote control was for. So now when the bird take off they attack me directly.
