Man From Former Home Of The Dodo Busted For Drugs

Kasugai

The Mainichi has a story (Japanese) about a a foreigner arrested in Aichi prefecture for growing marijuana. This was no cupboard cultivation, he had quite a crop growing at a plot in the hills near Shinshiro, some distance from his home in Kasugai. One slightly interesting feature of the story is that the man, said to be a worker at an auto parts company, is from Mauritius. I have a vision of the police playing "Gaijin Hanzai Bingo" and some officer celebrating a win while his colleagues are lamenting the fact the doper wasn't from somewhere like New Caledonia, Luxembourg or the Cook Islands which would have netted them the prize instead.

Wouldn't the gold-colored plastic medal go to bagging someone from Narau? Not only does it sound like a Japanese word, but it's apparently going to be submerged in a couple of years.

The detective work required to tick Mauritius off the list would be way beyond the capabilities of the average bicycle registration checker.

You reckon this officer gets to personally accompany the agriculturalist on his deportation trip?

By foreigner, they won't mention it but I am sure he was a Brazilian. Most of those Brazilian temp factory workers in Aichi and Shizuoka are known to carry out a "side-business" to make some extra earnings.

I thought it was pretty funny. I'm sure there's some room in the bowels of a keisatsu bldg where they've got a map of the world with little stick-pins in each country for which they've been able to bust a perp.

Color codes:

blue = 1-10
green = 11-100
yellow = 101-1000
pink = Thailand, Philippines
red = those damn Soviets
silver = Big Daddy and its English-speaking tributaries
gold = China, Korea

My bad. I guess we are talking about a rare specie in Aichi. I automatically assumed he was Brazilian because lets face it, most "gaijin" auto workers in Aichi are Brazilians.

It wouldn't surprise me if the man had more than one passport. It's always difficult to parse a katakana name but it looks like Pave Luis Ricardo (i.e. Ricardo Luis Pave), which doesn't seem especially Indian, Creole, Chinese or French. His family could go back generations on the island for all I know but he would probably have fitted in more as an auto parts worker in Aichi if he was also a Portuguese speaker.
