A good idea by the IOC to go to a new region.

I thought i was watching this live and just learned that Tokyo and Chicago just got kicked out, devastating I know, but I did not hear about Rio got the nod yet.
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

Same here---Rio has not won yet.

Below is my post if Rio wins (and they deserve to win the bid).

CNN live on Sky PerfecTV announced the 1st round of voting 5 minutes ago. The second round of voting will be around 2am(?) Tokyo time.

CNN and the other US news stations are reporting that Tokyo is out.

Yeah, just heard that Chicago got booted in the first round, Tokyo in the second round.

Can't say I'm surprised. Yokoso indeed.

Would be great if Rio actually did win, but Madrid would be a great choice too... I bet Rio gets it though as South America has never had an Olympics and Spain had the '92 Barcelona games.

I am glad Chicago did not get it. Vancouver originally estimated the cost of hosting the 2010 Winter games at $650 million. The cost is now at $2.5 billion. I realize that is CANADIAN dollars, but still, a billion here, a billion there and pretty soon you are talking real money. I am sure Olympics in Chicago would have been a huge money pit.

I am pulling for Rio, South America deserves an Olympics -- and the accompanying co$t of ho$ting.

Congratulations to Rio! It's definitely going to be an interesting games.

Only the 3rd time the Southern Hemisphere has hosted an Olympics, first time out of Australia.

Is anyone really surprised. It's about time that the Olympics should be held somewhere else besides the US, Canada, Asia or Europe. It's not a bad thing.
Rio, they deserve it. Congrats to Rio!! Give me reason to practice my Samba. That'll give the city something to strive for. Now they can clean up that city, beef up security, fix and update lot of their infrastructures.
The US has too many problems at the moment and Obama is all over the place, Health care reform, raising unemployment to date is 9.8% then there is Afghanistan the whole debacle. Obama needs to address these issues first and not worry about pitching a bid for Chicago, besides if Chicago would have gotten the Olympics how would they have paid for it? Personally, I thought Obama going to Copenhagen was a big mistake, if anything, he should have came back with some Tuborg or Elephant beer!

The new official swimming uniform for women is the tanga. No full-coverage suits allowed. Also, the opening ceremonies will make Carnevale look like a church play.

xenomorph42, I was just waiting for this thread of criticism to start. Not sure how Obama tackling health care would have had anything to do with the Olympics, or Afghanistan for that matter, since hosting the Olympics seems to be mostly a municipal or state venture.
I guess the right wing will be out with the long knives blaming Obama for the loss to Rio. He was damned one way or the other.
But I agree with the other posters who said it was time the games are really global. If Rio can do it, great for them.

I think Brazil was the right choice; Aside from the games rarely being in the southern hemisphere, Brazil is starting to blossom and the Olympics would boost it's statue at a time the country might be establishing itself as an economic power..

Nah! It's the tits and thongs I'm happy about! Bring on the chicks with dicks! :p

edit: BTW, since there's a large population of Japanese in Brazil, Japan can still claim they 'won'.. I'm sure the concrete oyajis are frantically phoning their distant cousins for construction contracts. ;)

I'm glad that Rio won...That's a bunch of potential "The Governor of Illinois was arrested today for...." headlines avoided, or at least different reasons why the gov. might be arrested for. And I think these things have a much bigger impact in countries with something to prove and who really want to hold the games, although I'm sure that it certainly helped that Rio guaranteed the high levels of financial backing nor will Rio being just 2 hours off US Eastern Standard Time prove detrimental to the bidding prospects for Olympic TV broadcast rights for the US (previously, the US TV rights have equaled about the same amount as the TV rights for rest of the world combined, although it remains to see if that will continue)

Of course, you can criticize Obama. Is the 'O anointed one exempt from it. I know Chicago quite well and the city and the whole economic state of the US and I for the life of me cannot understand why Obama wants to trek around the world to go to Copenhagen. In that case, he should've sent Biden to handle those affairs. It just doesn't look to good to many Americans with the present state of the economy that Obama would make that a high priority issue. The man has got 4 years! No need to over-fill his plate. Has nothing to do with Right-wing, Left Wing politics.

Obviously you didn't see the way a meeting of republicans burst into cheers and applause when they heard that Chicago had lost and that it was the first voted out. Not sure what these people were thinking, but it seemed they were just happy that Obama was dealt a defeat. Rush Limbaugh said it was Obama who lost. WTF!

Most Rep. just want Obama to do his job, be a President and NOT a celebrity, you have to admit, the media has too much of a lust relationship with him and people are getting tired of it. The Rep. want Obama grounded and take care of real issues first, then I think if he goes on Oprah or to Uno's nobody will really care!

Greji, I have no problem with Rio getting the games, I feel they were the most deserving, but when the leaders of all the other countries were there to stump for their cities, including Hatoyama making another very good speech in English, I think it was necessary for Obama to go and join in on the final presentation.
Now if as you say, there were some comments to the effect that the Obamas were hard done by, by making the trip, well that isunfortunate, but then again, these days with the Fox news making machine, I would like to hear Michelle Obama say those things directly and not believe any second hand information.
But to cheer against your own country, and it had nothing to do with the cost, or security or anything like that, it was just to see Obama defeated and bring him down a peg. In my 43 years I don't think I have ever seen such hatred for a man as I am experiencing with Obama in the US right now.

Don't forget what they were doing to GWB just a year ago. But, you're right, Obama is getting removed from a lotta people's Christmas card list a bit faster than was expected.

As I said, I'm from that area and would have liked to see Chicago get it, but I also thought Rio was a bit more deserving.

I did enjoy listening to a lot of the pompous US media arseholes that just knew it was in the bag for Chi-town. They were hymn-hawing and just ingredulous that they were wrong on their assumptions. That softened the day nicely.....

I understand you have a lot of sympathy and empathy for Obama, but in the US, there "IS" quite a bit of discontent with Obama, yes for many liberals, this is very shocking, but the all omnipotent anointed is not above criticism.
Bust was criticized every minute of his administration(some of it rightfully so)but when ANY individual disagrees with Obama or has questions about his policies, you are either a racist, bigot, out to get him, not letting him do his job and frankly, people are getting real tired of it. Not only Conservatives. FOX is not the problem, Obama had the all of the American media, outlets especially MSNBC in his pocket, if CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, Univision, the NYT, LA times etc. and "one" network actually, asks legitimate questions and concerns about his policy? That makes them out to get the President?? The people are giving him a chance, but he needs to take care of serious issues at home. Besides, we had the Olympics quite a few times, I'm quite content that Brazil got the Olympics, it's about time Latin America got them. Also, Chicago had the least amount of votes and didn't even make it to the second round. What does that say. Obama went there for nothing.
