Flush before you fly: Japanese airline asks passengers to 'empty bladders' before take-off
By Daily Mail 2009 Oct. 07
A Japanese airline has embraced a controversial new method of reducing aircraft weight - by asking passengers to spend a penny before boarding.
All Nippon Airways has announced that 'loo monitors' will be positioned by the boarding gates in terminals to ask waiting passengers to use the toilets before entering the aircraft.
The airline believes that empty bladders will equal lighter passengers and therefore, a reduction in carbon emissions...more...

Just for that, I will take a fat dump in the Econ seats during the "fasten seatbelt" section of the flight and leave the door wide open so everyone can smell my manly scent.

Oh, I rarely fly ANA unless my life depends on it...

I can't imagine who the hell came up with this. Marketing? Sounds like a marketing droid sort of thing.

Assuming that 480 passengers on a 747 piss out 500ml before getting on board they would save a whopping 240kg, plus/minus a bit. A brief Google search shows that a loaded 747 weights somewhere around 350,000kg, more at maximum weight. The 240kg piss savings works out to 0.07% of the flight weight.

Someone fire that marketing droid.

I'd seen this written up on a few sites but never actually clicked through. Is this another case of a "real" news source getting suckered by an Onion article? Damn funny anyway.

Nope, I think it's real news. I heard it on Bloomberg World Economic News last night - the (UK) reporter had a hard time stifling a giggle.

An even more J-ingenious idea, they also plan on reducing the overall size of their in-flight magazines.

The average piss weighs about .6 pounds, so with 400 people you save something like the weight of one passenger with luggage... waste of effort.

Next thing we will have to convert all of our coins to paper money to reduce weight.

But this is a non-story - perhaps we should post to snopes.

Can't be arsed to check, but doesn't the President of RyanAir make similarly silly pronouncements? I know he recently threatened to charge for loo use.

I heard the same article on CNN. I agree going green is good, I'm all for it, but I really think people here are taking the whole green/eco thing just a little bit too much. Going to some stores and not using the AC when it's either too cold or hot in buildings or in the cars and using the toilets with all the lights being off in the hallway, signs everywhere in the building telling you to "please after finish, turn off" Driving on the bus and at every light turning off the engine. Now, you have to use the John before getting on a plane?? Just a bit excessive, to say the least.

I actually think it's a good thing. Keep in mind, it's more then just waste that has to be worked with...

For every 1kg of body waste, it'll require another (guessing) 500gms of water, plus the accumulated waste over time. Planes aren't emptied at every stop, usually once a day depending on plane usage.
Additionally there's the 'power' of running a toilet system, for which the ground toilets (well, usually, but Japan have those funny electrical things on their toilets) don't require power to function.

EDIT: At say 250kg's of waste during a flight (because it's not all urine, it's just not as easy to say "Do a poo, before your board" added up to 6-8 short haul flights in a day is now nearing 2 tonnes on the last flight.

Additionally, it'd be only one step in a list of 'green' measures. ^_^

You guys realize that even if you pissed before going on board, you will have to replenish it by drinking more water so it's net zero. The airline still has to haul around bottles of water and those not so tasty Japanese orange juice. So much for the "go =-=insert your favorite airline name here=- for their green initiative."

btw, nice avator, Taro.

Don't worry, I'm doing my best to balance things out! I drive everywhere in a gas sucking car that gets a whopping 4km/litre (the way I drive it anyway!) and leave the aircon on in my office 24/7.

You would need a seriously large plane before people are going to unload 250kg of shit prior to boarding. The weight of the plane/passengers/cargo outweigh 250kg of shit by such a massive margin that it doesn't even factor into the calculations. I mentioned this above but a loaded 747 weighs between 350,000kg and 400,000kg...

I hate to shit on your post (no pun intended), but most aircrafts are phasing out to the 777 or the 787 (god knows when that will ever be, but they're still better than the air*kaboom*bus) because of the better weight/fuel efficiency.

I maintain passengers should be charged in the same way as cargo... you pay per KG, you + your luggage.

Makes perfect sense.

You're obviously not a lardass like I am...:D

But, if this system was implemented -- and it could happen because on the surface it really seems logical -- imagine all the lawsuits: male vs female discrimination, racial bias, etc., etc...absolutely endless.

Loads of Japanese would love it, though: there are so many adults here who could qualify for kids' fares.

I still like the idea of taking a big shit before you fly, though...

Ask the stewardess. They'll answer it. It's part of the training.
