Meth: It's not just for the white-trash crowd

It comes wrapped in red foil and purple tissue, this intricate figurine molded in the form of a Japanese demon, with clawed feet, a mane of fire and a thick tongue jutting from a bloodthirsty smirk. Transparent, the size of a child's fist, it looks like a tiny ice carving or a statuette of glass. It is neither. In fact, it is 25 grams (a little less than one ounce) of nearly 100 percent pure crystallized methamphetamine hydrochloride, known on the streets of Asia as "Shabu." It was almost certainly manufactured in a clandestine laboratory in China, then shipped to the Philippines and on to Hawaii, and finally to Denver. Here it was purchased on the black market for $5,500 -- nearly five times the street value of an equivalent amount of cocaine and ten times that of low-grade, powdered crystal meth.

Shabu is so expensive because it is so pure -- and therefore so powerful. Most of the home-cooked speed in Denver is only 10 to 20 percent actual crystallized methamphetamine, adulterated with toxic by-products of the makeshift ingredients used in crude manufacturing processes. While any tweaker with a hot plate can whip together a batch of bathtub speed, Shabu requires a trained chemist working in a fully equipped laboratory with uncorrupted components. The result is pharmaceutical-grade meth -- 95-plus percent pure.

As much as the word can be applied to an illegal drug, Shabu is clean.

"There's no horse deworming medicine in this shit, okay? You can't make this kind of shit out of road flares and cold pills," says Nick, delicately unwrapping the Shabu demon atop the burnished steel of his Swedish designer coffee table.

"This is the shit JFK was getting jacked in his ass during the Cuban missile crisis. I shouldn't even be calling this shit 'shit,' because it's disrespectful."

<snip>

The rush of Shabu itself is freakishly powerful. A single minuscule hit -- about one-tenth of a gram, vaporized and inhaled -- is enough to keep a weekend warrior like Nick riding the lightning for twelve hours.

The statuette on Nick's coffee table, cut into tiny pieces and smoked, holds about 250 hits.

Like opium, Shabu is relatively exotic in the United States (except for Hawaii, where it rivals cocaine in popularity), but in Asia, it's cheap and prevalent. The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency claimed earlier this year that 11 percent of the Philippine population uses Shabu. The drug is popular in Japan and Thailand and is so pervasive among the professional classes in Indonesia that the government of that country last year instituted mandatory Shabu-specific drug testing of all public officials...

Do people from Denver caught with shabu get off lightly if they say they bought it from some Japanese guy in the city's entertainment areas?

I read that article a little while ago, interesting read. No desire to fuck myself up with speed but the difference between the pharmaceutical grade stuff written about in that article and a batch of bathtub meth must be pretty huge.

They have that new method of making crank, the "shake-and-bake":

http://www.reporternews.com/news/2009/aug/24/shake-and-bake-method-of-making-meth-new-to-area/

This also came out a while ago but this thread reminded me of the time I lived in Spokane, WA., dubiously claiming to be the meth capital of the 'states. Those guys would cookup in the camper vans (just like the Breaking Bad guys) and then dump their waste chemicals into the national forests.

To see a cleanup looked like a mini-daisy cutter bomb went off in the middle of a pristine forest. Everything within at least 25 meters of the dump site was dead. And even more, still acidic and leaching into the soil. PH's of 1 and 2's are not uncommon at the dump sites.

Its a shit drug and an even shittier effect on both environment and people.

Tried speed a few times in my younger days....couldn't see why people get hooked on it though.

Going several days without sleep is frightening. You know your body needs it more than every but you just can't fall asleep. :(

Had a stint with crank in the late 80's, but switched to blow because it was more 'organic'. ]Japanese military[/URL]. ;)

Too true. Way back when, when E was the drug of choice, we have a crazy summer night that started with some pot then quickly escalated to a night on the town bombing around on E that was so dirty it felt like we were getting a buffet of drugs, then finally came out the liquid acid. What started out as a lazy Sat. night became an intense teeth gritting (that would be the crank mixed in) to the hallucinations (mescaline also) then finally at 5 am when I was trying so hard to get to sleep, I looked over at the fireplace and it started dripping and melting into the floor. Oh God, not now with the acid. Closing your eyes doesn't help, plus looking at my big blue queen-sized comforter just made things worse. It started looking like the Pacific complete with rolling waves and little boats and shit.

What a complete mess it made of my brain for the next week. I felt like shit for 2 weeks (that would be the total lack of dopamine), but my buddy that brought all the shit over was high on crystal and omg was he still revving and ready to go. Scared me so much I never tried the stuff and never will. I've seen what people do to get another hit and how it affects lives and communities. What a really, really, shit drug. Wasn't that diet pill p-something also a chemical relative of speed?

I think most diet pills of the past (and probably some of today too) are amphetamines of some sort or other.

Seriously scary shit.

Most are based with Ephedrine, the precusor for meth (which means of course, shabu), which is why it is heavily controled in J-land.

shabu

Postby yabanjin » Fri Oct 16, 2009 7:04 pm

is really nasty.....really nasty.
I could never see how the Japanese guys reckon it gives them endless wood.
Quite the opposite effect...

had a mate who used to have big shabu parties in Chiba...Chiba is the capital of meth in Japan BTW...
He got so paranoid after really hammering the shab, that he stormed downstairs to the house of a teacher he worked with at a jnr high school and screamed at him "I know you know I am having shabu parties!!!!Leave me alone or watch out!!!!!"

...you can imagine the outcome,yeah?
