Maybe her definition of good looking is the metrosexual-herbivore range of dudes...

I'm a guy (straight) from new york and I totally believe her. In terms of looks, the competition 'seems' brutal if you just look around at other guys on the streets/clubs/etc., but so many of those guys with the perfect clothes, teeth, hair, etc. in NYC are indeed gay or bi. Most of the straight guys in NYC don't fit the ideal these women have cultivated from their years of watching "Sex and the City."

A lot of Japanese women who go to NYC go with dreams of that TV show in their heads, and are generally disappointed. The bottom line is that there are a lot more straight hot women in NYC than straight good looking/good job having guys, so women there often try to put blinders on and go after the muscle bound, well dressed, model looking guys who are often, yep, not into women. The job thing is important, too. Many women won't mention it in NYC, but if you don't have a decent job (read: no name tag, no manual labor) no matter what you look like they don't even consider you a real option. Money is always part of the equation in NYC, even for fresh off the boat Japanese women with cash and credit cards of their own.

It's always interesting talking to Japanese people who have lived in NYC. Many JP women come to NYC looking for career freedom, gender equality and of course love, trying to shake off the oppression of male-dominated Japan, but they often come back to Japan after realizing that life in NYC is really tough and the city usually only yields its riches to those who are equally tough. So they often come back after realizing that for all the minuses associated with being a woman in Japan, it's still a great place to live in terms of overall quality of life.

BTW, I could actually say some of the same things "in reverse" regarding a lot of gaijin that come to Japan...

Is she the one that does the New York Style segment on NHK Morning News every Friday? If so she seems to cover stories that being style related would be largely have a alot of gay men in them.

this is absolutely spot on. i went to nyc in 2007 and it was like it was it's own planet when it came to men. my friend (female...no i'm not gay) and i were pissing ourselves at every club we went to because if the men were not gay, they were self proclaimed PUA (Pick Up Artists) who had all these moves and lines, delivered in clothes that cost more than they make in a month and with teeth whiter than the sun. and with even more product that a host in a male j-bar.

the only place an authentic off the plane j-girl can get some in nyc is if they go to harlem with jungle fever. even the PUAs in manhattan don't want j-strange because they know when the lights go down, they would be going where the bush ain't bald.

the same in reverse about gaijin in japan doesn't only apply to the fairer sex though, there are many a 'zero to hero' round eyes in the land of the rising sun...

whatta load of....

Obviously she's looking in the wrong spots. Obviously she never met me. =P

Or had unreal expectations. (Hm just like every other Japanese girl who gets wide eyed and goes "Heeeee--!" everytime I tell them I'm from New York City.

Seriously, like a couple of other folks mentioned before. She's in media arts. Yes a number of the guys in that field who are "exceptionally" good looking and polished are probably gay or bi. But there are large number of good looking polished guys (like me!) who would be more than willing to give her a bigger perspective on things. (No pun intended.)

A show supposedly written by gay men (which explains why the women protagonist behave as such). :p

Reminds me of...
Japanese tourists feel so let down by Paris shop assistants that they need treatment for a type of depression known as "Paris Syndrome".

"There are around 20 cases a year of the syndrome and it has been happening for several years," Miyupi Kusama, an administrator at the Japanese embassy in Paris, told the Guardian. Already this year it has repatriated at least four visitors suffering from hallucinations.
Japanese people who go overseas with images of foreign places driven only by TV images get what they deserve. There's more than enough information about the reality of life in NYC or Paris or wherever for anyone to get a reasonable image of that place. No sympathy from me whatsoever.

Heh. I had a bitchy gay coworker in Seattle who observed, on hearing a fugly female coworker who'd transferred up from San Francisco complain that she couldn't get find a boyfriend/husband because all the men were gay, that ugly women always say that.

Miss NHK here is far from fugly, but she fell into the same trap as innumerable nipponesers, naive, credulous critters that they are: no, you morons, Americans DON'T look like the people you see on "Lost," "The OC," or whatever the fuck else it was you watched.

Hetero American men in particular are pretty damn mittomanai.

If she's so worried about all the guys being gay, why didn't she offer herself to them "Miss Japan-style?"
I'm not gay, so I don't know, but aren't all cakeholes the same?
Mind you, being from NHK, she's probably already got a pole shoved up her Miss Japan entrance anyway....

As someone who works in media arts in NYC i resent that statement. Im just saying, gravity wasn't as forgiving on the res of her body as the botox was on her face.

Come on, how unforgiving can gravity be to the typical middle-aged Japanese? When they're young, they don't really have anything that would be prone to sagging later on. Just ask the Australian Censorship Ministry.

Err no. A few years back she had a wide show sized scandalous love affair with a married pro baseball player that involved lots of cosplay as I seem to recall. I forget the name of the player but I he may have been playing for Kintetsu at the time.

There you are Hair! If she wasn't a three-holer, she probably wouldn't have gotten the assignment! You can still probably find forensic trace evidence of her on every desk, chair and table (maybe even on the walls) in the NHK board room from her, ahh, pre-assignment interviews......

She's frumpy and dowdy....no wonder there were no good-looking guys. The first sight of this better-suited-to-picking-paddies bod would scare anyone away....myself excepted, of course. Still, I reckon even I, with no standards of taste whatsoever, would still need to close my eyes and think of Mother England.
I guess if she's confident enough of herself to make comments like the one she did despite looking like a Japanese version of Susan Boyle without the fuzzy eyebrows, she must give great head.
