How did karaoke morph into "carry-okee" in English pronunication worldwide?

Don't get me started on this. I don't want to criticize Americans, but listening to the radio station from Misawa air base it is a travesty the way they pronounce some of the places around here. First off it is Misawa, better spelled Mesawa, but why do Americans call it Masawa, and how did Okinawa become Okanawa. The prefecture we live in is Aomori, and you must pronounce each of the vowels, it is not Amori, we are not the prefecture of love damn it. I could go on, but I don't think it is that hard to learn and say the proper pronunciation, you just have to try.

I think you're just going to have to get used to this. Or ignore it. Most of the people in the US military are not here because they're interested in Japanese culture or language. They were just sent here to do a job, and are going home sooner or later. To many, the sooner the better. As far as they're concerned, as long as they stay on base they're still on US soil and couldn't really give a fuck about what's going on outside the gate.

I'm not being judgmental, and there are exceptions, but I do think it is just the nature of the beast and choose to ignore it myself. Been that way as long as I can remember.

Have you noticed that the English announcements in trains that have them often pronounce the station names "gaijin-style," I assume in a misguided attempt to make them easier for foreigners to understand. Only promulgates the problem.
