And to think that 'The art of war' was written in China. Oh, the shame...

The fact that the guy's from a sports uni.... has no bias at all.
I broke a mirror this morning, which means I should be getting 7 years of bad luck - but my lawyer says he can get me 5.

Stupid idiot! Someone in his position of responsibility (the head of a tertiary education institution for God's sake) should not be making such needless, inflammatory comments. Despite the history, China and Japan have fairly good ties now and will build on these.
Besides, China's future wars are less likely to be against Japan than other neighboring nations with which it has such "friendly" ties as India and Russia, both of which it has engaged in conflict since the war with Japan ended.

Never underestimate the power of a war of attrition...

BUT... I don't see why china would try to kill their customers... seems totally counterproductive...

Well, we've got so many nukes in WESTPAC that even the most anti-Japan Chinese wouldn't dream of actually attacking Japan.

This guy is probably fantasizing about Japan invading China again... sort of like a kid who wishes the bully who has left him alone for years would throw another punch so he can hit him back, even though it turns out the bully is a great guy now*...

Your point? A nuke is a nuke. The deterrent is still the same.

I don't know about China or the U.S., but one thing I do know is that I definitely would not like to be nuked by a Kanchou.

Politically speaking... nukes are as good as dead.

It might have been possible to see them used to counter a nearly inexistant Soviet threat ready to come to eat your babies. Now that everybody have been sold to the "surgical precisiun bombs" and "weapons of mass destrucshiun are for dictators hiding in the desert riding camel with towel on their heads" any 'western' leader using them would commit a political suicide like never seen before.

The only deterrent part is against the USA...
USA: "do what we say, we haz nukes"
China: "nuh-uh... we haz dem too, wanna play"
USA: "well... no thanks..."

Even threatening to use nukes would be a display of weakness, like a bully using his fists to solve every problems.

So it's in fact no longer a deterrent, it's more a status quo. The few countries batshit insane enough to use them might be North Korea and maybe Israel.

When it comes to the danger of nukes and the stupidity of politics, you can't afford to be too careful.

I am not even going to dare to ask where you are looking on the Internet to be able to find a picture like this....

....still, it is a pretty powerful weapon of mass destruction (as I guess they all are when you consider their name).

Well, of course... we're not talking about actually using them, we're talking about the fact that they are a deterrent that would keep China from ever openly attacking, or invading Japan. And low-yield tactical nukes MIGHT have a use against an invasion force.

The only deterrent part is against the USA...
USA: "do what we say, we haz nukes"
China: "nuh-uh... we haz dem too, wanna play"
USA: "well... no thanks..."

That's just new-age MAD. But China needs our business so badly that it's really a moot point.

Even threatening to use nukes would be a display of weakness, like a bully using his fists to solve every problems.

I disagree. The US has no need to threaten the use of nukes... it's implied. That's why it hasn't been in a true conventional war that it didn't start in the last 70 years. It's the super-buff 6'5" guy that no one is stupid enough to piss off, except the scrawny 5'2" crazy person (North Korea), and even then, it's mostly words.

So it's in fact no longer a deterrent, it's more a status quo. The few countries batshit insane enough to use them might be North Korea and maybe Israel.

It's only been the status quo from the end of the cold war because of how effective they are as deterrents.

During the first gulf war they didn't prevent Koweit (USA's friend) to be flatenned by Iraq. USA got involved... in a war they didn't started. Their ultimatum was not heard... Even if at least 3 nuke-y nations were pushing it...

Also during the malouines war, UK nukes were not deterring anything...

French Nukular weapons program as started by De Gaulle was never intended to protect France from a Soviet takeover (we already had qui a few communist hardliners on the governement anyway). It has always been a disproportionnate F.U. to Nato and the USA.

Well, they weren't a deterrent because Iraq invaded Kuwait, not the three nuclear nations or a nation that they are obligated to defend by treaty, where we have nuclear weapons in place.
