Tokyo's population rises past 13 million mark as people come looking for work

Thursday, April 29, 2010

Kyodo News

The population of metropolitan Tokyo is estimated to have topped the 13 million mark for the first time in April, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government said Wednesday.

The population has increased by 1 million this decade after surpassing 12 million in 2000.

Calculated on the basis of the 2005 national census and monthly tallies of resident registry, the population was 13.01 million as of April 1, about 25,000 more than the month before due to job-related and other relocations to the capital for the start of the new business and school years.

The latest increase is attributable to a boom in building of large-scale condominiums in areas like Koto Ward and people moving to the capital in search of work, a metropolitan official said.

The pattern, where a substantial amount of people reside in a country's capital, is quite common, I believe.

So basically Japan is a land of rice-farming countryside dweller...
