This is such a bizarre story.

But the truly freaky part for me was the kuyakusho guy calmly stating that as long as no death had been registered, they had no alternative but to continue paying the pension. Even if records showed that the guy was 150 or 200 years old, they'd still have to continue paying the pension!

Do I detect a slightly flawed system?

Sounds like an opportunity to make some cash out of old and infirm inlaws.

Wonder if they will have to pay back the money?

But something seems a bit weird though as they only withdrew some of the money this year and not all of it. If they were really trying to defraud the system, they would be making regular withdraws right?

It begs the question, did they really just forget about the old geezer stinking up the spare bedroom?

Could be! I had an old gf like that. Had to kick her every once and awhile to see if she was still breathing. Good lay tho.....

I flew from Itazuke to Tachikawa that year, but the only skeletons I saw there wanted 1,800 yen for all night (five bucks US at the going rate).....

There were hookers serving gaijin in japan back then?
It must have been interesting times being a foreigner in japan in 1963.

My dad was here in the Occupation. He told me the wonderful things you could bget in those days for a cake of soap, pack of ciggies or nylon stockings.

There were over 200 gaijin only bars, clubs and cabarets outside of the main gate of Tachikawa AB at that time. A lot of the clubs operated 24 hours a day. Those would shut the doors around midnight because of curfew and you would be forced to stay inside until six the next morning with nothing to do but the hookers, while being forced to swallow massive amounts of beer at 60 to 100 yen for an obin.

It was a slow time for religious functions

No links yet, but just saw on the news that a 113 year old lady from Tokyo is missing, and her family haven't seen her for a few years. Didn't catch if they were claiming her benefits or additional details, sorry. Good to see the ward offices actually looking into some of these cases now.

I know Greji gave you a load of duff info about the areas around Tokio (thats how we spelt it back then) but all the action was really happening in Atami.

Whadda ya mean was happening Cranky? Atami still ain't to shabby. The action is back of the main street and just a little harder to find!
