Quarter of First-Time Mothers Had Shotgun Weddings in 2009

Japanese

A new government survey has revealed that roughly one in four married women having a first baby in 2009 conceived while still unmarried. As you might expect, this ratio was higher the younger the mother, with 80% of mothers under 20 getting pregnant before marriage. High shotgun wedding rates were seen in Okinawa (42.4%), Saga (37.5%) and Fukushima (36.7%) while metropolitan areas in both Kansai and Kansai were below the 25.3% 2009 average. 2007 remains a recent peak with a figure of 27.9% but last year is still well above 1985's 17.3% rate.

Frankly I'm amazed that *any* women under 20 are getting married before conceiving.

This reminds me of:

koshikochi wrote:Hi I'm new but I have a question I hope that's okay:

My in-laws refer to me as koitsu when I'm brought up in a conversation at dinner. I don't really know what they are saying otherwise but I asked my friend and he said that wasn't good. My wife (six months next weekend!) says they like me though. It's been weird lately because ever since we had the baby she hasn't wanted to have sex. I don't really get it because we're only in our early 20s. Weird right?

The figures don't really surprise me. Back when I was doing weddings as a rent-a-priest, I'd say at least 1 in 5 brides were visibly pregnant. On the data sheets the wedding halls would provide before the ceremony, there would often be a little note mentioning that the bride was X months along and to keep an eye on her in case she started feeling sick or dizzy.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.

Those numbers sound about right to me. I've know a shitload of people here who get married for that reason. Fucking sad.

Shotgun weddings up means maybe abortions are down? If that's the case, :nihonjin:

The solution to Shoshika is to just run sexier (read: borderline pornographic) programming during primetime hours and establish higher sound penetration standards for the walls of every new and refurbished domicile.

Pregnancies might go up a good 3%...which could make the difference between the Japanese being around in 2103 or not.

Yeah, just what Japan needs. A generation mistakes raised by parents who are miserable because they got married for the wrong reason.

I see your point but I am guessing there are a fair number of families out there where the reasons for marriage may have been 'rushed', but the end result turned out for the better.
