US Bases Crack Down On Unofficial Trade In Guided Tours

Postby Mulboyne » Wed Jan 05, 2011 6:05 pm

Telegraph: US soldiers at Japanese base 'selling tours'
Hundreds of requests from base residents to bring visitors inside the top-security facilities have been turned down in recent weeks, according to officials at the US Air Force's Kadena Air Base, the home of the USAF's 18th Wing and the hub of US air power in the western Pacific. Base personnel are permitted to bring guests into the facility, officials said, but they are required to know the individual. Local companies have been taking advantage of lax security for a couple of years by recruiting military personnel or their family members to escort them past the gate guards and provide a guided tour. The companies promote the tours as a cultural exchange programme and the base residents receive a cash fee. "These types of programmes are a security risk to the base populace because residents are bringing people they have never met on base," Captain Eric Craft, an official of the 18th Security Forces Squadron, said in a statement...Military authorities have launched a crackdown on the practice, which at its peak saw as many as 60 sponsors trying to get groups onto the base every day...more...
