Police have detained three men in connection with the hijacking of 726,000 ultrathin condoms last month. The 85,000 boxes of condoms went missing on transit from a Batu Gajah factory to Japan. Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan said the Malaysian suspects, aged between 29 and 30, worked in the factory. "They were picked up on Tuesday and will be remanded until Saturday to help in investigations," he said after a monthly assembly at the state police headquarters here yesterday. He said one of the suspects was nabbed in Klang and two others in Ipoh and along the North-South Expressway between Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh. He added that the suspects were believed to be part of an international syndicate and police were trying to locating the top-selling Japanese polyurethane product worth around RM4.5 million. "We believe the condoms were stolen when the container docked at Port Klang before heading for Japan."
On Jan 25, a container arrived in Tokyo empty with the locks replaced. The shipment was loaded at the Sagami Rubber Industries factory in Batu Gajah on Jan 6. Sagami Rubber Industries Perak factory manager Sato Koji lodged police reports in Ipoh and Pusing, Batu Gajah, over the missing prophylactics, billed as being 14 per cent thinner than conventional condoms.
