According to news.com.au the 9 arrested were Japanese students - not Kiwis. Case of school yard bullying far from home?

NINE Japanese students have been arrested on assault charges after the death of another Japanese student at a school in Auckland, police said.

Never Sent Your Daughters For Overseas Studies

Warning to all parents!!! Never ever sent your daughters for overseas studies!! Not only will she become bad, she will be a totally different person from before!! Sending her overseas will not be good for her as most girls turned bad after they been there!i've three cousins who were once cheerful and obedient daughters before they went overseas and after they came back, they have totally changed!!Not only they become quiet and very ang moh like, they've even turn rebellious towards their parents!!i suggest that if your daughter couldn't make it to the local uni or poly, don't sent her for overseas studies, let her work or do something else!!If you want your daughters to become sex toys and slaves and get cheated by the ang mohs there, then by all means sent them for overseas studies!!

The Japan Times today (27 Feb) ran this about the killing...

[b]Student killed in N.Z.]
...[the student] died from injuries sustained in the fight, but the official cause of death is awaiting completion of an autopsy, Holt said. His family in Japan had been contacted and the victim's name will be released Thursday.

Eight of the nine men remain in custody, Holt said, adding one was released on bail. The victim and the nine were all studying or working in Auckland while living at the academy, she said.

About 30 people were in the area at the time of the student's death and police are conducting an investigation, the spokeswoman said, adding that more serious charges could be filed in the future.

The Columbus Academy is a nonprofit organization based in Yokohama, a spokesman told Kyodo News. It assists youngsters struggling with problems of truancy and domestic violence.

2003-03-01 / Associated Press /

An Auckland school for problem Japanese youth should be closed and its staff and students deported following the violent death of a student...
New Zealand First Party leader Winston Peters said it was astonishing such a school would be allowed in New Zealand when the country already had a "superabundance" of its own problem teenagers.

"The Japanese government would certainly not welcome a plane load of Mongrel Mob (Maori gang) prospects from New Zealand so why should we import their social problems," Peters said in a statement.

...The accused are: Kazuhiro Sato, 19, Ryu Fukushima, 22, Ryuji Hiraki, 26, Hidetaka Nishide, 26, Masato Fujita, 19, Motomu Kobori, 19, Daisuke Fukuda, 20, Kato Tomohisa, 17, Nobu Oshima, 18.

The nonprofit International Columbus Academy was set up in 1989 to help problem Japanese teenagers... who have problems fitting in to the Japanese education system, using outdoor sports, English lessons and community interaction to restore their confidence.

Dead Japanese student was an overstayer - minister
04 March 2003

A student found dead at a West Auckland school for troubled Japanese youth last week was an overstayer, Immigration Minister Lianne Dalziel said today.

Nozomu Shinozaki, a keen amateur sumo wrestler who had mental health problems, was found dead from head injuries at the Columbus Academy last week.

Well, what was the right wing group

Postby Gaisaradatsuraku! » Wed Mar 12, 2003 3:31 pm

Maybe it wasn't the New Zealand factor so much as the administration. There was some right wing affiliated group that was taking in kids and one of them got killed (maybe drowned) by being overworked. Maybe this is the same type of place.

Land in NZ has got to be cheap and they need a lot of land to beat the shit out of these kids on.

Missed this thread earlier, but...
I never figured out the logic behind this. Is it because Japanese think their violent, troubled youth will somehow fit into the Russell Crowe society?

I assume the logic is the NZ is gonna BOOT CAMP for gakiproblem kids. Hell, that might work if a lazy brat was thrown onto a sheep ranch WITHOUT any other Japanese...his J-brain force him to join the sheep-zoku not doubt.

"Positive Peer Culture" has been the leading theory in youth work for decades now. I guess this "Auckland school for problem Japanese youth" created a NEGATIVE Peer Culture.

I got the same Right-wing impression about this "school". Here's the latest update...

Academy hopes to stay open despite slaying
The Japan Times: April 3, 2003
WELLINGTON (AP) Nine of its students face murder charges over the death of a fellow pupil, but an academy for troubled Japanese said Wednesday it still hopes to continue operating in New Zealand.
Court records published Wednesday show that Shinozaki, whose severely beaten body was found near the academy's living quarters, was charged in August with indecently assaulting a 14-year-old girl.

The hearing is also considering a charge against academy director Soon Keuk Kim...
Prosecutor Margaret Rogers said Kim, who came to New Zealand in 1994, ran an operation that looked after problem children of Japanese families, who were charged $36,000 a year per child. At the time of Mr Shinozaki's death, there were about 50 people living in three houses at West Harbour Drive.
"The conditions can be described as squalid," Ms Rogers said.
There was overcrowding, only basic food and toilet areas, no fire safety, and little or no supervision.*

Three hour beating before student died, court told

Nozomu Shinozaki, a 22-year-old student from Japan, died after a three-hour beating by nine fellow Japanese at the West Auckland Columbus Academy, a depositions hearing in the North Shore District Court at Albany was told yesterday....
...The hearing, being held to determine if there is enough evidence to send the defendants to trial, got off to a slow start as the court grappled with softly spoken Japanese interpreters and a sound system whose volume could not be turned up.

"You will just have to shout as if you are at a football match," presiding Justice of the Peace, Don Chapman, told one of the woman interpreters.

Later in the day she jumped with fright as a printer in the courtroom next to her and a witness whirred suddenly into life.

After a formal reading of the charges against the 10 defendants, Miss Rogers said Kanamori arrived in New Zealand in 1994 and some time in the late 1990s opened the Columbus Academy to capitalise on a niche market providing facilities for students with behavioural problems from wealthy Japanese families.

He could gross $36,000 a student per year but the conditions the students lived in were squalid and they received little or no supervision.

Mr Shinozaki arrived at the academy in 1998, having received mental health care in Japan. He suffered from a form of autism.

Nine Japanese students have been committed to stand trial for murder in the New Zealand High Court over the beating death of a classmate at an Auckland school, the Waitakere District Court said Monday....

Exhibits, including a broom, a mop, a large teapot, a pool cue and clothing, were bought into the court during the hearing.

But when 12 witnesses - some of them crucial - refused to return from Japan to testify at the trial, the Crown dropped murder charges against five of the accused. They immediately left the country...

The-Rest-of-the-Story

Postby Taro Toporific » Sun Nov 14, 2004 9:46 pm

Here's a great epilog to the whole sorid story. The news report has lots of juicy gossip and The-Rest-of-the-Story.
Image<--murdered student, Shinozaki on the left
Lost souls of Japan

13.11.2004
By CATHERINE MASTERS

The young Japanese men made Nozomu Shinozaki sit on the floor and stood around him. Why had he set fires in the compound where they lived, they demanded. Why had he stolen from them?
The 22-year-old with Asperger's syndrome, intellectually slow and socially inept, didn't give good enough answers. The men began kicking and beating him. After three hours he was dead.....
The persecutors of Shinozaki were not children and instead of an island they were in a secluded institution in West Auckland. They were isolated in a country they did not understand and their own customs were totally foreign to police, who found elements of the case virtually incomprehensible.
It was a weird case and it kept getting weirder. The tight-knit Japanese community in New Zealand closed ranks and the Weekend Herald understands the police investigation was hampered at almost every turn.....
.....reporters began to take a stream of anonymous telephone calls and emails from nervous ex-Columbus Academy staff members and former language school teachers, telling, in broken English, very similar stories.
They talked of boys and girls sharing rooms and unwanted pregnancies. They mentioned drugs and booze; even assaults and intimidation.
Kanamori, who also goes by the name of Soon Keuk Kim, yelled at the students a lot, they said.
Rooms were filthy and "stinky", and students had to work after school for little or no pay in two restaurants that were owned by the academy.
....
Kenichi Asano, a visiting professor of journalism, told the Herald of the extraordinary pressure that students were under in Japan.
To be different from the expected norm is to be miserable. Suicides by school children are common, along with bullying and beatings, sometimes leading to death....
...In Japan women have tests to see if their unborn child will be handicapped; if positive they abort them, he said.
The students at the Columbus Academy "are not supposed to be born in Japan".....
....There is little doubt Shinozaki was bullied in this country. There is also little doubt he could be pretty annoying - in fact, more than annoying.
At the time of his death he was facing charges for indecently assaulting girls....teachers also said he was cheerful and tried hard and he had his photograph printed in the Herald, taking part in sumo wrestling at an Auckland club.
But during his time at the academy, about five years, he never went home and his parents never came to visit him.

Also: Kyodo Report
Crown Prosecutor Margaret Rogers asked the four defendants be given terms of seven years each, but Justice John Laurenson said the four escaped longer jail sentences because of their early guilty pleas, the press association reported. He also said he believed the four accused were remorseful, despite the contrary beliefs of probation officers who interviewed them.
...The judge said Shinozaki's last hours must have been horrific and that he had received a letter from his family recording their grief and the complexity of their feelings toward the accused. The letter also included prayers for those involved, and their families. "In short, it was a very humbling, gracious and magnanimous expression of hope. I have been very moved by it," Laurenson said.
A pathologist said the beating was so severe it caused a fat embolism -- a condition where fat enters the bloodstream. The pathologist said that in 40 years he had encountered fat embolisms a few times and that they only occurred in the most severe of beatings.
